“The Hands That Caught Us” - my series of conversations with our Black Midwifery Elders is winding down and I have been holding off on releasing one of the most poignant recordings so far………..our ancestor elders!

I chose the beautiful Midwife Folklorist, Okunsola Amadou (African Indigenous Midwifery Museum) to help me share about a few of our beloved elders who have transitioned. You can only imagine the grief and pain of those of us who were blessed to have known them, be loved by them and enriched by their wisdom. I hope you enjoy this episode.

“Another midwifery moment, another call for a ‘Perinatal Pause’. So - whose knowledge gets recognized, whose knowledge counts?
I’ve spent my whole career trying to answer that question.
As far as I’m concerned, indigenous and community knowledge systems belong at the center of maternal care. I learned that from the women I served, I learned that from the practitioners of this beautiful ancestral art and their generously passed-down empirical prowess.

The JJ Way® curriculum and practice was built from that knowing, not added to it after the fact. This is the work. Building an equitable perinatal ecosystem, one relationship at a time — and refusing to wait for permission or endorsement to center what we already know is true.”

*URGENT CALL TO ACTION*

Please take just two minutes before June 5th to contact your Members of Congress and urge them to protect the midwifery set-aside in the final FY 2027 Labor, HHS Appropriations Bill.

Email your legislators 👉 VoterVoice.net/ACNM/Campaigns

This funding isn’t just a line item; it’s a lifeline for the programs that educate and train the next generation of midwives who will serve families and communities across the country. Accredited midwifery education programs support all nationally recognized midwifery credentials — Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), Certified Midwives (CMs), and Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs). Without this funding, these programs and the expanded access to midwifery-led care they make possible are at risk.

Every email, call, and conversation makes a difference in securing the future of midwifery care and birth center access!
