The Woodstock Police Dept posted this this afternoon and we have heard reports of kids having their e bikes impounded too as are more cities and counties across the US. Please know the rules, and make sure your kids know them too. We already have received more than a few notes from the local ER's on injuries our patients have received on them, some serious. We don't want your family to have this happen too.
We are concerned, like many members of our community, about the growing number of children seen riding high‑powered e‑bikes and electric motorcycles around Woodstock that they are not legally allowed to operate. Kids are also riding in places where these vehicles are not permitted, including multi‑use trails and sidewalks.
Georgia law is very clear: some of these fast, high‑watt electric two‑wheelers are legally considered motor vehicles, requiring a driver’s license, registration, insurance, and a DOT‑approved helmet. They are not allowed on sidewalks and trails.
Class 1 and Class 2 e‑bikes both have a maximum assisted speed of 20 miles per hour and a maximum motor output of 750 watts. They are allowed on public roads and multi‑use paths. Helmets are required for riders 16 and under.
Class 3 e‑bikes have a maximum assisted speed of 28 miles per hour. Riders must be at least 15 years old, and helmets are required for all riders regardless of age. Class 3 e‑bikes are allowed on public roads, but multi‑use paths are prohibited for these vehicles.
Electric motorcycles exceed 30 miles per hour and have motors above 750 watts. They are classified as motor vehicles. They require license and registration, insurance, and a DOT‑approved motorcycle helmet. These vehicles are for roadway use only.
Before your child rides, please take a moment to identify what type of vehicle they have. Check the top speed, motor wattage, and where it is legal to operate.
We need your help to keep Woodstock’s roads, sidewalks and trails safe. Thank you to everyone who provided information based on WPD's recent BOLO post relating to this matter.
