Amy Poehler once said, “Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you. Spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life”. So true, and I can attest to that. I have a rare and beautiful group of friends that I call ‘My Village”. We’ve all known each other since our kids were in elementary school, and even some since preschool. Although we were friends from the beginning, it was during the Pandemic that one of these ladies reached out to a group of us and encouraged us all to be actively involved with keeping our friendships nurtured through lockdowns, masking and social distancing. We ZOOMed and voted on monthly themes (western, royalty, etc) to continue seeing each other’s faces and hearing each other laugh. We looked like the Brady Bunch in our little boxes on the computer screen, but we made it work. We were there supporting one another in the most challenging of times for us all! It’s hard to describe what evolved from there, except that that adversity we went through together would eventually act as an adhesive in tightening and solidifying our friendships in a way that likely never would have occurred pre-Covid.
Find your people: is it at your church, or maybe your kids’ school? Is it through clubs or organizations you belong to, or maybe your job or somewhere you volunteer your time where you’ll find your people? Don’t fool yourself, it takes a conscientious approach and concerted effort to call and arrange to spend time with friends, and some of us are better at doing this than others. If this isn’t your thing (planning), then that’s ok, but don’t say no to the invitation! A big part of making it happen is showing up.
A therapist once told me “Suit up and show up!” I’ve always loved that saying. Find your people, feed your friendships, if you say you’ll be there then be there…with the right attitude. It’s amazing how a person, or group of friends can elevate our lives and help give us new perspectives and ideas. You get what you put into it. So what are you going to do this week to connect, (or reconnect) with your people, your tribe, your Village? And if you don’t have one yet, why not try and build one?
