Sand colic is caused by the ingestion of sand, dirt, DG, and other similar matter. The build up of this matter causes painful irritation and inflammation in the digestive system which leads to colic including diarrhea and sometimes even fever. This build up can also become so great that it causes actual impaction which can require surgical intervention😢
𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:�☑️ Horses fed directly on the ground without mats covering the ground (ingest dirt and sand with their hay)
☑️ Horses foraging on dry and overgrazed pastures (can take in dirt while trying to continue grazing)
☑️ Horses fed infrequently on a dry lot may search the ground for something to nibble on (causing sand ingestion)

✨ A big Western Equine Wellness welcome to Corryn! ✨

We’re so excited to introduce the newest member of our team! 💙

Corryn is joining us as our Administrative Assistant and will be the friendly face helping keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes. From assisting our clients to supporting the day-to-day operations, she’s already becoming an important part of the Western Equine Wellness family.

Corryn brings a veterinary background with experience as a veterinary technician/assistant, working with small and large animals. Her passion for animal care, helping others, and the western lifestyle makes her a perfect fit for our team.

Outside of work, you’ll find her spending time with her family or with her spicy red mare, Honey Bee. She also grew up competing in High School Rodeo, barrel racing, and Drill Team, so she is no stranger to the equine community!

⭐ Testimonial Time: Abscess ⭐

"Last fall, the barn manager at the barn I ride at approached me and asked me to work on her mare. I got some history and learned that she had an ongoing hoof abscess for the past 6 weeks with little to no improvement. The vet was involved and the abscess was visible on x-rays in the heel region but nothing seemed to be working to improve it. The mare was non-weight bearing and very painful. We came up with a plan and after our first session, she was already putting more weight on the left hind. I worked on the mare every other day for about a week and a half, saw improvements each time and the abscess eventually came out of her heel. The owner was concerned that her whole heel would be destroyed, but her heel remained completely healthy and I was able to get the abscess to completely drain without compromising the integrity of the heel.
