Highlighting our future Healthcare Heroes: Se'Kaijah Freeman

At COG Restore, we're proud to invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Se'Kaijah will soon attend the University of the Virgin Islands to study nursing with the goal of becoming an IVF Nurse.

When asked about her internship experience, she shared:

"My favorite part about interning at COG Restore so far was the amazing sense of love and community in the office."

Her advice to future healthcare professionals:

"Keep your head high and steer straight toward your goals."

We're excited to watch Se'Kaijah's journey and can't wait to see the difference she'll make in the lives of future patients.

Please join us in wishing her continued success!

Hurricane prep often means lifting cases of water, moving shutters, carrying plywood, filling coolers, and moving outdoor furniture.

Protect your back and joints while preparing:

Bend your knees.
Keep heavy items close to your body.
Avoid twisting while lifting.
Ask for help with oversized items.
Use carts or dollies when available.
Take breaks.

Storm prep should not leave you with a preventable injury.

If lifting has caused back, shoulder, knee, or hip pain, schedule an appointment with Dr. Bacot.

August in the Virgin Islands brings back-to-school errands, youth sports, hurricane prep, travel, and busy work schedules.

That means more lifting, walking, standing, driving, climbing stairs, and carrying bags.

If your knees, hips, shoulders, back, feet, or ankles are already bothering you, this is a good time to get evaluated before pain interrupts your routine.

Do not wait for pain to become the loudest voice in the room.

Outdoor exercise in the Virgin Islands heat requires planning.

Choose cooler times of day when possible.
Hydrate before, during, and after activity.
Wear lightweight clothing.
Take breaks.
Pay attention to dizziness, weakness, headache, or unusual fatigue.

Your body is not being dramatic. It is giving you data.

If pain, weakness, or injury is limiting your ability to stay active this summer, get evaluated.

Schedule an appointment with Dr. Bacot.

Before you head to the airport, ferry, cruise ship, or road trip, prepare your joints.

Wear supportive shoes.
Avoid rushing with heavy luggage.
Stretch before long travel days.
Use luggage with wheels when possible.
Pack any braces, wraps, or orthopedic supports you normally use.

A painful knee, ankle, hip, or shoulder can make travel harder than it needs to be.

If you have ongoing pain before your trip, schedule an appointment with Dr. Bacot.

Myth: If you can still walk, your knee injury is not serious.

Fact: Some knee injuries still allow you to walk, but that does not mean the joint is healthy. Swelling, instability, popping with pain, locking, or difficulty bending the knee should be evaluated.

This is especially important for athletes, active adults, and anyone working on their feet.

Do not let a “small” knee injury turn into a longer recovery.

Question: Can children and teens get overuse injuries from sports?

Answer: Yes. Young athletes can develop overuse injuries when they repeat the same movements too often without enough rest. This may happen with year-round training, playing on multiple teams, or not allowing the body enough recovery time.

Parents should watch for pain that continues after practice, swelling, limping, reduced performance, or a child avoiding movement.

Sports should build strength and confidence, not chronic pain.

If your child has ongoing sports-related pain, schedule an appointment with Dr. Bacot.

Summer in the Virgin Islands means more walking, swimming, beach days, sports, travel, and family activities.

But if your knees, hips, shoulders, feet, or ankles are already bothering you, increased activity can make symptoms more noticeable.

Before you push through pain, ask yourself:

Can I walk comfortably?
Can I climb stairs without sharp pain?
Can I sleep without shoulder or hip discomfort?
Can I exercise without swelling afterward?

If the answer is no, it may be time for an orthopedic evaluation.
