Lending a helping hand 💛

At the end of July Ivanna Eudora Kean High School Principal Sally Petty called upon the community to help raise funds to fix the air conditioning system in the Digna M. Wheatley Gymnasium. Their goal is to raise $75,000, the estimated cost to cover four new units.
As a nonprofit, we face our own financial stressors, but we saw one of our partners was in need and wanted to help by giving a $2,000 donation to go towards the repairs.
We recognize the important role this space serves not only for students, but for the wider community. Along with physical education classes, student rallies, and performances the gym hosts community events such as basketball and volleyball tournaments, JRTOC events, including Color Guard and drill team training, and annual exhibitions with schools and regional partners.
In the spirit of community support, if we all give what we can then students will return to school to learn in a safe, comfortable environment. We would like to thank IEKHS and Principal Petty for their continued support of STEEMCC as we strive to expand care and improve health outcomes across the territory.

Donations for the IEKHS air conditioning system are tax-deductible and can be made via PayPal at www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/W4GYLTR52KZQU.

Honoring our veterans today and every day 🩵

STEEMCC serves a wide variety of patients of many races, ethnicities and ages. For National Health Centers Week, today is Population Focus Day, where we highlight the unique needs of patient groups we care for. This year we focused on veterans.

Veterans face challenges in receiving care, from coordinating travel to reach the nearest VA clinic or experiencing health conditions that require specialized care. At STEEMCC we understand these obstacles and aim to support V.I. veterans by providing affordable, quality primary healthcare.

Outside of the exam room, we realize these heroes deserve acknowledgment and support. We feel one day out of the year is not enough to honor their sacrifice.

In May we invited veterans to the center to play cards, dominos, and gather in fellowship. Students from Joseph Gomez Elementary School and Joseph Sibilly Elementary School wrote inspirational letters to our veterans, which will be distributed later this month, along with gift bags.

We look forward to collaborating with local partners to better support healthcare for veterans here in the territory and encourage the community to thank veterans for their service.

🌟 For National Health Centers Week our Health Conditions Focus was diabetes and hypertension. We encouraged the community to "Know Their Numbers" by offering free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body doesn't use insulin well and can't keep blood sugar at normal levels. It can develop over many years, but you may not notice any symptoms, so it's important to get your blood sugar tested if you are at risk. Diabetes can increase your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and eating less salt can help control diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

STEEMCC is on the front lines of preventing and managing chronic disease in St. Thomas-St. John. Accessible, high-quality primary care is essential to keeping our community healthy.

What is National Health Centers Week?

NHCW is an annual observance honoring the hundreds of health centers that form the backbone of America’s primary care system. This year’s theme, “Building Innovative Care Where It Matters Most,” could not be more fitting for St. Thomas East End Medical Center Corporation.

We love seeing our patients smile 😁
Today was Patient Appreciation Day and we showed our gratitude by sharing bush tea and dumb bread with cheese. Our mascot Dr. Fill made an appearance and our younger patients were treated with a toothbrushing kit from Ms. Colon, Executive Assistant to the Dental Director.

Thank you to all of our patients, for entrusting us with your care. 🩺🩵

Summer may be in full swing, but there is no slowing down at the St. Thomas East End Medical Center Corporation. July was filled with opportunities to bring healthcare directly into our community, from neighborhood outreach and expanded behavioral health services on St. John to cancer prevention partnerships and back-to-school clinics on St. Thomas. Each initiative reflects our commitment to improving access to quality, compassionate care and building healthier communities across the U.S. Virgin Islands. Thank you to our patients, partners and supporters for helping us make a difference every day.
