First Step Therapy, LLC First Step Therapy, located in St. First Step Therapy, LLC, located in St.

Croix, provides speech-language and occupational therapy (Pediatric OT) to children, adults and geriatrics with cognition, swallowing and sensory disorders. Croix, USVI, comprise of licensed Speech Language Pathologists who specializes in the diagnoses and treatment of speech, language, cognitive and swallowing disorders in children and adults. We have extensive training in the following areas:

*Speech/Language Evaluations

*Dysphagia (swallow) Evaluations

*Functional Oral Motor/Feeding Evaluations

*Cognitive (strokes, traumatic brain injuries, etc) Assessments and Treatments

*Fluency Evaluations (stuttering)

*Voice Disorder Treatments

*Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (VitalStim)

*Modified Barium Swallow Study (Videofluoroscopy)

*Accent Reduction/Modification Therapy

🗣️ Speech Word of the Day: Dysarthria

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder that occurs when the muscles used for speech are weak or difficult to control. Speech may sound slurred, unusually slow or fast, soft, breathy, or strained.

An SLP can help improve communication by working on speech clarity, breathing, rate, loudness, and alternative communication methods when needed. 💚

Sudden or unexplained changes in speech may require immediate medical attention.

October is AAC Awareness Month! 💜

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It supports children and adults who need additional ways to communicate alongside speech or when speaking is difficult.

AAC comes in different forms, including picture boards, communication apps, and speech-generating devices. Devices can also be accessed in different ways by touching the screen, using switches, or using eye-gaze technology to select messages with eye movements!
