Scapular mobility is the foundation of efficient shoulder movement.
During overhead arm elevation, approximately 120° of motion comes from the glenohumeral joint, while the remaining 60° comes from upward rotation of the scapula on the thorax, creating the classic 2:1 scapulohumeral rhythm.
When scapular motion is restricted or poorly controlled, the upper trapezius and levator scapulae compensate, increasing neck tension, reducing shoulder mobility, and raising the risk of subacromial impingement.
Effective training should emphasize scapular control, particularly activation of the serratus anterior and lower trapezius, to optimize shoulder mechanics, improve movement quality, and reduce unnecessary load on the cervical spine.
