A Proper Mortuary Transport Technician has to be your firms standard.

Treating these positions as mere logistics. Hiring solely to “get bodies moved” fundamentally misunderstands and diminishes the calling. This is sacred work. It requires more than a vehicle and a schedule; it demands professionalism, emotional intelligence, attention to detail, and a deep respect for both the deceased and those left behind. Shortcuts in hiring, training, or support undermine the dignity of the profession and the trust families place in the firm.

When a firm observes poor performance standards whether in care, communication, appearance, or reliability. Those issues must be addressed promptly, constructively, and consistently. Excellence is not optional in this field. By investing in skilled, well-supported technicians and holding the work to the high standard it deserves, firms honor both the living and the dead, strengthen their reputation, and elevate the entire profession.

In short, valuing proper Mortuary Transport Technicians is not just good business, it is the right way to serve families at one of life’s most difficult moments.

True deathcare professionals live by a higher standard of availability. It is not merely being present in body, but being present in character—fully, selflessly, and without reservation.

It is answering the phone when the hour is inconvenient.
It is listening when words are hard to find.
It is guiding when the path feels lost.
It is comforting when the heart is broken.
It is explaining with patience, caring with dignity, honoring a life, and helping a family begin to build the story that will carry them forward.

Availability is more than a duty. It is the quiet foundation upon which reputation is built and trust is earned. In the darkest moments, when life has been turned upside down, those who grieve do not need perfection. They need something solid to hold onto.

Be that solid presence.
Be the steady hand.
Be the one who is truly available.

Never underestimate the quiet power of people talking about you when you’re not in the room.

At first glance it might sound risky or even a little uncomfortable, but that kind of conversation is often the very thing that brings families through our doors. We sometimes think of “chatter” as negative, yet genuine word-of-mouth is one of the strongest ways families find a provider they are willing to trust with one of life’s most difficult moments and often one they are willing to travel a little farther or invest a little more to work with.

When my own mother passed away, I had several local funeral homes to choose from. In the end I selected a firm a few towns away because of conversations with my spouse and in-laws. Their long-standing relationship with Hill Funeral Home in Rhode Island made the decision clear. My in-laws knew the Hill family and their staff not only from the professional care they had provided, but from years of real friendships and community connections. That personal trust guided us when we needed it most.

Every greeting, every conversation, every quiet moment of presence in the community is the beginning of a relationship. Hooky promotions and advertisements may generate occasional interest, but lasting trust and a solid client base are built through consistent, sincere relationships over time. Those relationships are what families remember and what they quietly recommend to others.

At D&L Mortuary Transportation we encourage funeral directors to talk behind our backs, especially to other directors.

Funeral director feedback is one of the most valuable tools in mortuary transportation.

As removal technicians and transport teams, we are often the first point of contact with a family but the funeral director is the one who continues the relationship long after we leave. Their observations give us a clearer picture of how our work lands on the people who matter most. When funeral directors share honest feedback, several important things happen:

• Service quality improves in real time
• We catch small details that families notice but may never mention directly
• Training becomes more targeted and relevant
• Communication between the transport team and the funeral home gets stronger
• Trust deepens and that trust shows up in smoother, more consistent care for every familyFeedback is not criticism.

It is partnership. The best transport companies treat funeral directors as true collaborators. Their insights help us refine everything from arrival protocols and documentation to how we interact with families in the home. The result is a higher standard of dignity and professionalism that reflects well on both the transport team and the funeral home. In an industry where first impressions carry lasting weight, listening carefully to the professionals who know the families best is not optional, it is essential.

Mortuary transfer and transport is not just a logistical task.

It is a family experience. In those first moments after a death, the transfer team often becomes the first professionals a family encounters.

We walk into their home, hospice room, or care facility at a time when the world has just stopped.

How we move.

How we speak.

How much space we give.

How carefully we handle their loved one.

All of it becomes part of the family’s memory of that day. When we slow down and let the family take the lead, offering time for a final goodbye, explaining each step, asking permission, and treating personal belongings with care. We are not simply performing a transfer. We are helping shape a moment of dignity that they will carry with them.

Every detail matters:

• The calm introduction and genuine condolences

• The patience while they say goodbye

• The careful documentation of personal items

• The respectful placement on the stretcher

• The quiet professionalism that says, “We see you. We honor them.”

At its best, mortuary transport is not something done to a family.

It is something experienced with them. Because the way we care for their loved one in those first critical hours becomes part of how they recognize our funeral home partners and begin to trust.

The quiet crisis in deathcare no one talks about enough:
workforce challenges in mortuary transport.

Removal technicians are often the first professionals a grieving family meets.
They walk into homes, hospitals, and scenes at all hours carrying both the physical weight of the deceased and the emotional weight of the moment.Yet the role remains one of the hardest to staff and retain. Here’s what makes it so difficult:

• Physical demands – Tight spaces, stairs, bariatric cases, and repeated lifting that take a real toll on the body.

• Emotional labor – Showing up with calm professionalism when families are in shock, while managing your own exposure to trauma and grief day after day.

• On-call lifestyle – Nights, weekends, holidays. Life gets interrupted without warning.

• Limited recognition – The work is essential, but often invisible. Many people still don’t even know the job title exists.

• Training & retention gaps – High standards for dignity, chain of custody, and customer service. But not always the support systems or career pathways to keep good people long-term. The result? Burnout, turnover, and increased pressure on the teams that remain which ultimately affects the quality of care families receive in their hardest moments. Mortuary transport isn’t just logistics. It’s the first chapter of a family’s final goodbye.

How is your team addressing these challenges? Better scheduling, mental health support, stronger training pipelines, or something else?

When my business partner and I assumed ownership of D&L Mortuary Transportation nearly three years ago, we faced the significant challenge of repairing and rebuilding the company’s reputation.

In the beginning, we adopted the guiding phrase “Expect to be Impressed” across all company communications and transactions.

Our goal was to deliver meaningful, consistent improvements and allow our clients to experience those positive changes firsthand. Today, we proudly operate under the D&L Standard of Care

"Dignity & Legacy" We provide unwavering dignity to the families we serve and protect the legacy of the funeral firms we represent.

As one of our Transfer Technicians, Paul T., so eloquently stated:
“We are no longer trying to prove ourselves. We are who we say we are and our clients know it.”

The current pricing environment in our industry has significantly increased the volume of price shopping, which creates substantial additional work for both funeral directors and transfer companies.

Our time is especially valuable when caring for families and those already in our care. It is increasingly frustrating to invest time and resources into arrangements that may never materialize, a situation that is occurring with growing frequency.

Families are actively seeking more affordable options, and in the case of third-party transfers, some funeral directors are doing the same. However, budget-focused operations often operate with overloaded schedules, minimally trained staff, and significantly higher case volumes. These conditions frequently lead to service challenges and quality issues.

For illustration, below is an actual online review involving a low-cost provider and their budget transfer company. It serves as a sobering reminder that the cheapest option is not always the best option.

ONLINE REVIEW: Hospice nurse notified this Funeral Home about the stairs and requested 2-3 people for removal. We had a plastic sheet with handles that was used to get my mother in law into the apartment from the hospital. Willie shoed up alone anyway , dismissed our concerns, tried to preach to us what we should feel. He insisted on removing the body alone, will never forget the dull loud thumps as the body was dragged down the stairs…
Avoid them for any cost!

ONLINE RESPONCE: I am sorry for the experience that you had with your Mother-In-Law. We take our business very seriously. Unfortunately the removal service company does not use a plastic sheet to remove your loved one from the home.
It would of been more beneficial had you called us to voice your concerns. It would have allowed us to act on this situation much sooner. My condolences again to your family.

Small details matter, especially in moments that hold such deep meaning.

From time to time, families ask us to pick up clothing for their loved one. We’re truly honored to help in any way we can. However, we’ve noticed that clothing is often handed to us in a plastic grocery bag. While we understand this comes from a place of practicality during an incredibly difficult time, it never quite felt right to us.

Those garments deserve better care. Plastic bags can cause wrinkles and simply don’t reflect the dignity and respect we all want to honor. That’s why we’ve made a small but meaningful change: we provide families with a gentle, reusable garment bag or a simple, elegant carrier when we’re asked to transport clothing. It’s one small way we can help preserve both the clothing and the reverence of this moment.
