In Ayurveda, Artava refers to the reproductive essence in people with menstrual cycles, including the menstrual flow and the body's capacity for reproduction. Because the reproductive system is one of the last systems to be nourished, it is often one of the first places we notice the effects of chronic stress.
When digestion (agni) is weakened, or the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of stress, the body naturally prioritizes immediate survival over reproduction. Over time, this can leave the reproductive system undernourished, showing up as irregular cycles, painful periods, PMS, changes in menstrual flow, or challenges with fertility.
Healthy Artava reflects more than reproductive health. It reflects the body's overall vitality, nourishment, and resilience. In Ayurveda, supporting the menstrual cycle begins by supporting the whole person: tending to agni, calming the nervous system, restoring deep nourishment, and creating rhythms that help the body feel safe again.
