Tuesday, March 3 — Full Moon
The shala will be closed.

In the Ashtanga tradition, we honor moon days as rest days. A pause in the rhythm. A moment to soften the edges.

Take the day to:
• Rest your body
• Reset your nervous system
• Reflect on what’s come to light
• Set a quiet intention for the next cycle

Full moons illuminate. They amplify. They reveal.
You don’t need to push — just observe.

Shala reopens Wednesday, March 4.

Shala update:
New flooring is arriving today, with installation to follow shortly after. We’re moving steadily toward a refreshed space beneath our feet.

Thank you for your patience as we rebuild.

Rest well. Reset. We’ll see you after the full moon.

Dear Community,

I wanted to share a brief update regarding the shala repairs.

The flooring work has taken longer than initially anticipated. The new floors are now scheduled to be installed on February 7, and we expect to reopen on Wednesday, February 11, assuming the final installation and curing process stays on track. I know delays like this can be frustrating, and I truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we take the time to restore the space properly.

While this is unfolding back home, I’m settling in nicely in Goa. It has been some time since I’ve been back in India, and being here again feels deeply meaningful—a special opportunity to gather with community and focus on practice, unencumbered by the usual day-to-day responsibilities.

Looking ahead, this will be Blake’s first time teaching and subbing at AYLA, and he’s very much looking forward to practicing and working with the community once we reopen.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. I’ll continue to share updates as we get closer to reopening.

With gratitude,
Jim

Community Update:
We’ve been loving our new Victor Heights space—great energy and so wonderful to welcome new neighbors into the shala.

Unfortunately, recent flooding impacted the floors, and repairs are now underway. The shala is expected to reopen February 2, following Moon Day. We truly appreciate your patience, and all active weekly and monthly memberships will be extended accordingly.

In other news, I’ll be in India for the month of February. While I’m away, we’re grateful to welcome Blake O’Connor from Denver, a Level 2 SYC Authorized Teacher, who will be teaching during this time.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to practicing together again soon.

New Space - New Home We’re happy to share that The AYLA Collective is moving into a new home.
Beginning December 28, 2025, AYLA will open at our new Echo Park location.

We’re deeply grateful to Silverlake Yoga for hosting AYLA for over four years. That generosity played a meaningful role in rebuilding and sustaining the Ashtanga Yoga community in Los Angeles, and we carry that foundation forward with appreciation.

Our new space is open, quiet and minimal, designed to support Mysore-style practice and the steady rhythm of daily sādhanā. We’ll begin with a soft opening as we enter the new year.

Practice Hours
Sunday–Friday | 6:00–9:00 a.m.
(Doors open at 6:00 a.m.)

Location
Process Yoga
1041 Alpine Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012
Victor Heights — between Echo Park, Elysian Park, and Chinatown

We look forward to continuing practice together in this beautiful space.

So much has happened this year — especially here in LA — and yet we persevere and keep practicing. We quietly celebrated our 4-year anniversary back in May, and remain deeply grateful for the community we’ve built. Each person leaves an imprint on the practice.

Join us for our Holiday Party at Baby Bistro .la on December 18 — soon to be our neighbor at our new shala space (more info to follow).

Back in the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Appalachian Trail. Traveling from LA to Atlanta, then up into western North Carolina before making my way down to Savannah for the holiday family gathering. The leaves have fallen; everything is sparse, more open. It’s the perfect time to hike the thousands of hidden trails and waterfalls throughout Cherokee Country, with a pit stop to visit Noah Williams, my teacher, in these quiet hills. His silver hair catches the mountain light—young in spirit but full of old wisdom. The teacher said, “Honor the tradition, the lineage—how lucky are we.”

In honor of Sharathji, join us this Friday, November 7th, 2025 at 7:30am for a Led Class using a recording of his count. November 11 marks one year since his passing.
I’ve always loved his count — something about it pulls me into the present moment and anchors me to my breath. On the surface it feels simple and pure, yet its directness and clarity hold a depth shaped by his years of experience and guidance. That depth lives on in his students, carried forward in every practice.
From time to time, when I practice at home or while traveling, I still listen to his recording of the Led Primary Series.
I practiced with him and this count in Mysore, across the U.S., in Asia, and in Europe… it has always felt like home. And now, it feels like healing.

Om Shanti,
Jim

Dear Community,

It has been a painful time in our Ashtanga community and lineage in light of recent events involving predatory abuse by a teacher toward students. We want to stand in solidarity with survivors and affirm our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Many of us quietly continue our sadhana in our home shalas, doing the work of practice. Today, we feel called to also take a public stand. This is our way of saying: we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you.

This statement has been painstakingly put together by many teachers from across the globe, each offering different perspectives and opinions. It is not perfect, but it represents a shared commitment to begin this difficult conversation together. With gratitude, Jim

It’s been over a month since we returned to LA, but the imprint of our time in North Carolina remains vivid.

Each day, we drove from Asheville to Sapphire—a quiet, forested town tucked deep in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, about an hour and a half away. There, in a small shala that Noah Williams built by hand, something rare and powerful unfolded. Just three students. No distractions. No escape. Only the breath, the practice, and the depth of direct transmission.

Mornings began with simple yet potent pranayama, followed by chanting, asana, and long post-practice conversations—rich with stories, reflections, and insight.

Noah now lives in the forest with his family—a dramatic shift from his years in Los Angeles. His devotion to the practice remains unwavering. His teaching has become even more distilled, infused with a quiet urgency to preserve and transmit the essence of this lineage. Again and again, he emphasized the sound of the breath—loud, steady, alive—as the anchor of the practice. In that sound lies its beauty, its simplicity, its strength.

I returned home changed and inspired—and I hope to return again soon.

Om Shanti,
Jim

Today, on Guru Purnima, we honor and celebrate our teachers — those who light the path, guide us through darkness, and remind us of who we are.

We give thanks to the living lineage — the great tree of knowledge passed from teacher to student, practitioner to practitioner — rooted in devotion and nourished by daily practice.

This year carries a deeper silence — the first Guru Purnima without Sharathji physically among us. His presence, teachings, and strength continue to echo in the breath and rhythm of our practice.

We bow with gratitude. We continue on.

ॐ श्री गुरवे नमः

Salutations to the auspicious Guru.
