Why does your back keep “going”?

Most people assume they’ve damaged something every time their back flares up…

The reality is often very different.

Poor sleep, stress, inactivity, doing too much too soon, and everyday life can all contribute to making your back more sensitive from time to time.

The movement that triggers the pain is often just the final straw—not the real cause.

If you’re stuck in a cycle of recurring back pain, there may be more you can do than simply waiting for it to settle.

One thing I’ve been seeing a lot of in clinic lately is the impact stress can have on the body.

Many people come in with neck pain, headaches, jaw tension, back pain, muscle tightness, poor sleep, or recurring aches, often without realising how much stress may be contributing to their symptoms.

When we’re under prolonged stress, our bodies stay in a heightened state of tension. Muscles remain guarded, recovery slows down, sleep quality suffers, and minor aches and pains can become persistent problems.

While treatment can help reduce the pain and improve movement, addressing the underlying stress is often just as important. Regular exercise, good sleep habits, time outdoors, and taking moments to switch off can make a significant difference to how you feel day to day.

If you’ve been carrying more stress than usual and your body is starting to let you know about it, don’t ignore the signs.

Your body and mind are more connected than you might think.

Today I treated Ryan, a photographer & videographer who’d been dealing with tightness throughout his whole body from long hours shooting, carrying equipment, travelling and spending time in awkward positions.

I was aiming to help throughout treatment by improving mobility, reducing muscle tension, easing joint stiffness and helping the body move more efficiently overall. Treatment is tailored to the individual and in this case Ryan, and can include hands-on techniques, stretching, movement advice and rehabilitation to help the body recover and perform better.

Whether you’re an athlete, creative, office worker or constantly on your feet — looking after your body matters!

Day in the life of a self-employed osteopath working between 3 clinics… and Fridays are always the busiest 💥

Everyone wants to get themselves sorted before the weekend — from desk workers carrying tension all week, to runners, gym-goers and busy parents trying to keep moving pain-free.

Long days, lots of coffee, plenty of hands-on treatment… but helping people feel and move better never gets old 🙌

Grateful to do what I love across Berkshire every single week.

After a busy day in clinic, I’m finishing with a return-to-play assessment for a patient returning to football.

This is something I incorporate as standard in my practice—return-to-play testing is essential to evaluate strength, function, and confidence before full return to sport. Keeping patients safe is always the priority.

Just wanted to jump on to share a success story from clinic recently.

Patient X has been struggling with knee pain that was restricting them from doing daily activity and affecting their gardening. They started working with me in January and through exercises, treatment and goal setting we have made some major progress in day to day activity for them.

There’s still further to go but we will keep improving week by week!

Day in the life of a self employed osteopath, splitting my clinic between Ascot in the morning before jumping in the car and heading off to a home visit for a patient
Who unfortunately cannot make it into clinic anymore.

After seeing that Patient, I made my way back to the clinic where I was seeing seven patients back to back to finish the day.

Even though it was a tough day at work it is ever so rewarding helping people feel stronger, Move better and reduce their pain!

After finishing clinic I made my way back home where instead of my easy run I completed 40 minutes on the spin bike as I continue my training for Bracknell half marathon in 10 days time.
