🫀 The Truth About Cholesterol: It’s Not the Villain You Think It Is

For years, cholesterol has gotten a bad reputation—but the truth is, your body NEEDS cholesterol to survive.

✅ Cholesterol is essential for:
• Making hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol
• Producing vitamin D
• Building healthy cell membranes
• Supporting brain and nerve function
• Making bile acids to digest fats and absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K

In fact, your liver makes about 80% of the cholesterol your body uses because it is so important.

But here’s the key: EVERYTHING in moderation.

When cholesterol levels become too high—especially when combined with chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes—the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries increases. This can raise the risk of:

* Heart attack
* Stroke
* Peripheral artery disease

It isn’t always about the cholesterol number alone. Your overall metabolic health matters just as much. Factors like inflammation, triglycerides, HDL levels, blood sugar, blood pressure, exercise, sleep, nutrition, and genetics all play a role in cardiovascular risk.

💡 Instead of asking, “Is cholesterol good or bad?”
Ask:
✔️ Is my body inflamed?
✔️ Am I insulin resistant?
✔️ Am I exercising regularly?
✔️ Am I eating enough fiber and healthy fats?
✔️ Am I managing stress and getting quality sleep?

The goal isn’t to eliminate cholesterol—it’s to keep your body in balance.

Healthy cholesterol supports life. Excess cholesterol, especially in the presence of inflammation, can become a problem. Balance is the goal.

If you’re concerned about your cholesterol, don’t focus on just one number. A comprehensive evaluation can help determine your individual cardiovascular risk and guide the best plan for you.

❤️ Take care of your heart by taking care of your whole body.

Why Your Provider Needs to Know Every Supplement You Take 💊

Many people think only prescription medications matter—but supplements can significantly affect your lab results and even change medical decisions.

A great example is creatine. 💪

Creatine is one of the most researched and effective supplements for building muscle and improving performance. However, regular creatine use can increase your creatinine level on blood work. An elevated creatinine may make it appear that your kidneys aren’t functioning well, even when they’re perfectly healthy.

If your provider knows you’re taking creatine, they can order a Cystatin C test, which is a more accurate way to evaluate kidney function in people taking creatine or those with higher muscle mass.

This is why it’s so important to bring a complete list of:
✅ Vitamins
✅ Minerals
✅ Herbal supplements
✅ Protein powders
✅ Performance supplements (like creatine)
✅ Over-the-counter medications

The more your healthcare provider knows, the better they can interpret your labs, avoid unnecessary worry, and make the best decisions for your care.

Remember: “Natural” doesn’t always mean it has no effect on your body—or your lab work.

Your supplements are part of your medical history. Make sure your provider knows about all of them!

🎆 Fun Fourth of July Fact! 🇺🇸

Did you know that three U.S. Presidents have ties to Independence Day?

🇺🇸 John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both signers of the Declaration of Independence and former presidents, died on July 4, 1826—exactly 50 years after the Declaration was adopted.

🇺🇸 Five years later, on July 4, 1831, President James Monroe also passed away.

It’s a remarkable historical coincidence that three of America’s first five presidents are forever connected to Independence Day.

As you celebrate today, take a moment to appreciate the history, the freedoms we enjoy, and the people who have helped preserve them.

❤️🤍💙 Happy Independence Day! Stay safe, enjoy the fireworks, and have a wonderful Fourth of July! 🎇

🚨 Insulin Resistance: The “Pre-Pre-Diabetes” Most People Don’t Know They Have

Did you know you can have insulin resistance for YEARS before your blood sugar becomes abnormal?

Insulin resistance (also called Metabolic Syndrome or “pre-pre-diabetes”) occurs when your body’s cells stop responding properly to insulin. Your pancreas compensates by producing more insulin, often keeping your glucose normal while damage is already occurring.

Common signs and symptoms:
• Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
• Difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise
• Fatigue, especially after eating
• Sugar or carbohydrate cravings
• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
• Increased hunger shortly after meals
• Skin tags
• Dark, velvety patches of skin on the neck, underarms, or groin (acanthosis nigricans)
• Elevated triglycerides or low HDL cholesterol
• High blood pressure
• Elevated fasting insulin (even with a normal A1C)

Who is at risk?
• Family history of diabetes
• PCOS
• Being overweight or carrying excess abdominal fat
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Poor sleep or sleep apnea
• Chronic stress
• History of gestational diabetes

Why it matters:
Untreated insulin resistance significantly increases your risk for:
➡️ Type 2 diabetes
➡️ Heart attack and stroke
➡️ Fatty liver disease
➡️ Alzheimer’s disease (“Type 3 diabetes”)
➡️ PCOS and infertility
➡️ Chronic inflammation
➡️ High blood pressure
➡️ Certain cancers

The good news? Insulin resistance is often reversible!

Focus on:
🥩 Eating protein with every meal
🏋️ Building muscle through resistance training
🚶 Walking after meals
🥦 Eating high-fiber, whole foods
😴 Prioritizing quality sleep
💧 Staying hydrated
⚖️ Achieving a healthy weight
💊 When appropriate, medications or targeted supplements may help improve insulin sensitivity.

Don’t wait until your A1C becomes abnormal. A normal glucose does NOT always mean normal insulin.

If you’re struggling with stubborn weight gain, fatigue, or cravings, ask your healthcare provider about evaluating your metabolic health. Checking a fasting insulin level and calculating your HOMA-IR can often identify insulin resistance years before diabetes develops.

☀️ SUNSCREEN 101: Not All Sunscreens Are the Same! 🧴🌞

Protecting your skin isn’t just about preventing sunburn—it’s one of the best ways to reduce premature aging and lower your risk of skin cancer.

🔹 Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens
Contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
✅ Sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays
✅ Start working immediately after application
✅ Great for sensitive skin and children
✅ Less likely to cause irritation

🔹 Chemical Sunscreens
Contain ingredients such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and others.
✅ Absorb UV rays before they damage the skin
✅ Often feel lighter and blend in more easily
✅ Need to be applied 15–30 minutes before sun exposure

🌞 What Does SPF Mean?
SPF measures protection against UVB rays, the rays responsible for sunburn.

✔ SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays
✔ SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays
✔ No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays

💡 Sunscreen Tips:
• Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects against UVA and UVB rays)
• Apply generously to all exposed skin
• Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating
• Don’t forget your ears, lips, scalp, neck, and tops of your feet
• Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing whenever possible

🚨 Remember: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but it’s also one of the most preventable.

Protect your skin today so it can protect you for years to come! ❤️

☀️ Summer is Here – Don’t Forget Your Hydration! 💧

As temperatures rise, your body loses more fluids and essential minerals through sweat. Staying hydrated isn’t just about drinking water—it’s also about replacing important electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Signs you may be dehydrated include:
🔹 Fatigue or low energy
🔹 Headaches
🔹 Muscle cramps
🔹 Dizziness or lightheadedness
🔹 Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
🔹 Dark-colored urine

Tips for staying hydrated this summer:
✅ Drink water consistently throughout the day
✅ Increase fluids when spending time outdoors
✅ Add electrolyte replacement during exercise, outdoor work, or excessive sweating
✅ Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, berries, and oranges
✅ Limit excessive alcohol and sugary drinks, which can worsen dehydration

Remember: By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated!

Stay cool, stay energized, and keep your body functioning at its best all summer long. ☀️💦

💊 THYROID MEDICATION + ACID REDUCERS = A COMMON MISTAKE! 💊

Did you know that medications used for heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers can interfere with how well your thyroid medication works?

Common acid-reducing medications include:
• Omeprazole (Prilosec)
• Esomeprazole (Nexium)
• Pantoprazole (Protonix)
• Lansoprazole (Prevacid)
• Famotidine (Pepcid)
• Cimetidine (Tagamet)

These medications can decrease the absorption of thyroid medications such as levothyroxine, Synthroid, Levoxyl, NP Thyroid, and Armour Thyroid, which may lead to:
❌ Fatigue
❌ Weight gain
❌ Brain fog
❌ Hair loss
❌ Feeling cold
❌ Difficulty reaching optimal thyroid levels

✅ Tips for best absorption:
• Take your thyroid medication first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
• Wait 30–60 minutes before eating or drinking anything besides water.
• Separate thyroid medication from acid-reducing medications by at least 4 hours when possible.
• Avoid taking calcium, iron, magnesium, or multivitamins within 4 hours of your thyroid medication.

If you’re taking a thyroid medication and still not feeling your best despite “normal” lab results, your medication timing may be part of the problem.

Questions about your thyroid health? We are happy to help!
