CW: miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Yesterday was rainbow baby day. For those who are new to this term, rainbow baby is the baby you have following a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death.

My feed was flooded with pictures of people’s rainbow babies, which was beautiful and encouraging to see.
And extremely brave given the sensitivity and vulnerability of the topic.

In my feed one particular quote stood out, “A rainbow baby does not replace our baby that died”

It was a reminder that on the day we celebrate our rainbow babies we continue to morn the loss of the baby we had - the positive pregnancy test that faded, that devastating ultrasound, the bleeding, the movements no longer felt, their last little breath.

The pain and grief that is experienced is real, valid and carried with you. Unlike what we are told to believe it doesn’t go away or get better with time. A loss is a loss, and it is okay to feel the same pain you felt the day it happened even years later ❤️

Dietary patterns & S***m health

50% of infertility cases are due to a XY factor (male at birth).

Majority are due to poor s***m parameters such as:
Low s***m count
Low s***m motility
Abnormal morphology (size, shape, structure)

Even with passing marks on a s***m analysis there is always room for improvement (Go check out the WHO’s wide reference range for s***m parameters)

Your dietary pattern can play a supportive role.

What is a dietary pattern?
Think of it as your dietary habits. Which foods you are consuming most of the time on a regular basis.

There are many studies demonstrating the impact diet can have on s***m parameters. I wanted to show you this short paper that nicely sums up which food components make the biggest difference and how.

Omega 3 fatty acids from either fatty fish like salmon or supplementation (there are vegan options too!)

Antioxidants - think fruits, vegetables, herbs & spices, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and dark chocolate

Fibre rich foods like legumes, raspberries, avocados and complex grains

There are other lifestyle factors that can affect s***m health worth addressing as well. Improvements can be seen in 3 months. They key to sustainable success is working with someone 1:1 to help identify & work your personal obstacles.

Send me a DM if interested in working together!

New Event! 📣Instagram Live with Dr. Melissa Bucking, ND this coming Tuesday December 13th at 12:30 pm EST

Excited to announce that Dr. Melissa Bucking, ND - Digestive Health focused Naturopathic Doctor - will be joining me on an instagram live this coming Tuesday to discuss how to thrive during the holidays when you have a sensitive gut.

Many of us, myself included, can get a bit apprehensive when we approach this time of year. Foods, snacks and gifted treats that we typically may not be accustomed to eating are so readily available. Not to mention the stress that the hustle & bustle this season brings.

Dr. Melissa knows this experience all too well, as someone has and works with individuals who have a sensitive gut, she has a lot of advice & helpful tips to share.

I'm so excited to have her share her knowledge with us!

And give her a follow

Event Info:
Instragram Live - Tuesday December 13th at 12:30 pm EST

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Hiii 👋

I haven’t posted on here for awhile. My family and I were recovering from being sick and slowly getting back on routine 🤪

In these past few months there have been so many new faces joining our community so I thought I’d reintroduce myself 🎉

I’m Laura!
I’m a PCOS & Fertility focused Naturopathic Doctor

I’m on here sharing all I know when it comes to navigating reproductive & hormonal health concerns.

I love getting to know my patients for the individual that they are - their values and goals so we can come up with a treatment plan tailored to their lifestyle.

Connecting with you all has been a tremendous gift. Hearing your experiences, tips and questions has and continues to be amazing ❤️

My hope is that I can be an empowering resource and share valuable information with you.

Outside of PCOS & fertility care you can either find me at home being silly with my family, at Costco spending all my money or checking out thrift stores for unique finds.

I also love to hike, garden and cook - but I rarely follow a recipe 🤪

I’m currently accepting patients both virtually and in person for naturopathic care & acupuncture.

I love hearing from you! If you’re wanting more info on how to work together or content you’d like to see - send me a message, I’d love to hear from you!

Instagram Live Event!

All about PCOS, Food & Mindset

When it comes to PCOS management there always seems to be a heavy emphasis on food - What to eat and what not to eat. When to eat and how much. It can be super overwhelming, frustrating or defeating when you feel like you are getting nowhere.

And although nutrition is important for PCOS, it is crucial to figure out a way that is sustainable and works for you!

Join me and Chelsea this Thursday June 30th at 1 pm EST where we discuss our experience with PCOS. How food plays an important role in how we manage it but how our mindset and philosophies around it play an even more significant role.

Join us live and bring your questions & comments! Replay will also be available for those who cannot attend live.

Hope to see you there!

Tracking Ovulation

Period tracking apps are not accurate when it comes to tracking ovulation 🤯

The reason being is that it typically just picks a day right in the middle of your cycle. But there are a few problems with that:
- A regular periods does not necessarily mean you are regularly ovulating
- We don’t necessarily ovulate right in the middle of our cycle
- Our day of ovulation can change cycle to cycle
- This method can be tough for those with irregular cycles

Here are 3 ways to track ovulation more accurately:

1. Rise in Basal Body Temperature 🌡
This is done by taking your oral temperature every morning at the same time before you get out of bed.
When your basal body temperature rises about 1/2 degree F or 0.3 C consistently for several days, it means you had just ovulated before your temperature went up

2. Changes to Cervical Mucus 🥚
When you are ovulating your cervical mucus becomes clearer & thinner. It also has a slippery & stretchy consistency - like egg whites

3. LH Strips/Ovulation Test
These tests measure a hormone called Luteinizing Hormone.
How to:
- Urinate on or dip test in urine at the same time in the afternoon.
- The exact days to test on depends on the length of your cycle
- Once positive, you are expected to ovulate 24-36 hours later

**Some with PCOS have multiple days of high LH and don't have a surge so results may be inaccurate

When trying to conceive planning in*******se a 1- 2 days before you are expected to ovulate, the day of ovulation and/or 1- 2 days after will help you stay within your fertile window.

It can be tricky to know whether or not you are ovulating. 🤔
If you’re having trouble, send me a DM - I’d love to help!

✨ PCOS Friendly Summer Salad

With the warmer weather arriving, anyone else craving fresh salads again?

Do you ever have a leafy green salad for lunch and find yourself an hour or two later looking for a snack?

Even salads as healthy as they are can sometimes not be exactly what we need in order to keep our blood sugar stable and our stomach full.

Build your salads in a way that sets you up for success, so that you aren’t needing that 3 pm bag of chips.

Here is how to start thinking about salads:

Lots of fruits & veggies that you enjoy.
Protein source like: tofu, fish, seafood, beans/lentils, meat or eggs
Fiber filled grain or starchy vegetable like squash, rice, quinoa or pasta
Top with a healthy fat like Olive oil
Lemon juice, vinegar and/or spices for flavor

Right now my salads are looking like this:
Boston Lettuce, Cucumber, Carrots, Apple
Wild Rice
Salmon
Olive Oil, Lemon Juice, Salt & Pepper

✨PCOS Friendly Dinner

Here’s how to setup this meal 👇

1. Fill half the plate with a colourful Salad 🥗
Fill it with anything you like!
Lettuce, spinach, kale
Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers
Radishes, carrots, cabbage

The antioxidants will help to lower the inflammation we often see in PCOS.

Drizzle some olive oil on top for anti-inflammatory fats and apple cider vinegar to lower the glucose spike of the meal.

2. Palm size piece of meat 🥩
The iron and protein content will help with hair regrowth. Getting enough protein helps us to feel full so we are able to control our cravings.

3. Roasted potatoes 🥔
Yes! Regular potatoes - there is no need to be afraid of carbs and cut them out completely. Potatoes are great source fibre, antioxidants, vitamins & minerals - all helpful for PCOS. We just need to be mindful of the quantity and making sure we eat it along side a healthy fat & protein for balanced blood sugar.
