My son has been learning to walk this week.

As he lets go of one object, he stumble-walks over to the next, with his arms flailing in the air making a "waaaah!" sound, as if to say: "OMG, look I'm walking, isn't this INSANE?!"

The funny thing is, he has no idea whether he'll be able to walk or not. He's never done it!

It made me think - at what age do we stop approaching new tasks exactly like this?

Imagine, as an adult, signing up to an acting class, picking up a new instrument or purchasing a camera - all for the first time. Instead of thinking "what if I'm not very good and everyone judges me?" we channelled our inner toddler and went in with:

"Waaaa omg ZUMBA what is this craziness?! So cool! Look at me everyone I'm really doing it!!! Oops I collapsed into Brenda!! Sorry! Lemme try again!"

It's so easy to forget that it's impossible to be brilliant at something first time. As adults we tell ourselves, despite any official 'adult' training, we can no longer look silly trying something new. Why? Because we will be judged if we get it wrong, and then cast out of the tribe...

Children haven't developed that social consciousness yet, which is why they are happy to try and fail over and over, yet as adults we are more cautious.

But think about what we could experience if we tapped into our inner toddler... and just tried writing that book, or tried those singing lessons or tried setting up that business?!

Yes you will wobble.
Yes you'll fall down.
Yes you will feel uncomfortable emotions.
Yes you might be screaming "waaah!" inside (or out-loud, no judgment), and your legs and arms might flail around a bit.

That's normal.

Do it enough times though and it'll become natural. Just like learning to walk.

If you were to channel your inner toddler, what would you try?

💥 Life. Is. Not. A. Rehearsal! 💥

What “story” are you telling yourself about your situation that is keeping you stuck in a job or situation you hate, or is preventing you going after the thing you really want to create?

Perhaps it’s:
• “I have no time”
• “I have no money”
• “I don’t have the skills or contacts”
• “I’m not experienced enough”
• “I’m not a very ...[kind/fun/intelligent/lovable/attractive] person”

For me, my “story” was that in order for people to respect me as an entrepreneur, I needed to present myself as someone who looks the part: with a nicely curated Instagram profile, and shiny photos on my website.

But the truth is: these stories are utter bu****it.

Every single one of them.

These stories just “feel true” because our brains are designed to keep us safe from potential threats, like rejection, failure and shame.

My story kept me trapped for hours perfecting every last piece of content I designed – rather than reaching out and serving people powerfully (because I’d be risking rejection, and that doesn’t feel very good!)

So, what story are YOU telling yourself that’s holding you back?

Once you’ve identified it…get curious about how true it really is.

Ask yourself:

• How long have you held this belief about yourself or your situation?
• When did you first start believing this?
• What is this belief stopping you from doing in your life or work right now?
• How would your situation change if you no longer held this belief?

WHAT IF THE OPPOSITE WAS TRUE?!

You then have a very simple choice: to keep choosing to believe the current story, or work towards changing the narrative.

⭐It is my mission to help creative professionals rewrite their own stories which are stopping them from making a positive impact on the world with their work.⭐

Did this resonate with you? If so, leave me a note in the comments below! ⬇️

This past year has been a bit of a game-changer for most of us!

In 12 months, I set up a business and became a mama to this precious lil' guy, Xavier! 💛

My priorities have shifted, identity changed and my goals have moved in an exciting new direction ↗️

I'm learning to juggle work, play and sleep to shape my version of a perfect work-life balance (Note: I've not yet nailed the sleep part 😂)

Tell me what exciting changes you've made this year?

I'd love to hear what you're up to and where you plan on going next!

What one thing can you commit to doing this week that will get you one step closer to where you want to be?

Often overwhelm and fear of failure mean that we don't even get off the starting blocks - which is why it's important to remember that SOMETHING (no matter how small) is always better than *everything* 🤩

How often do you convince yourself that "you're falling behind"? 😭

When evaluating our lives and careers, it's easy to convince ourselves that we should be further along, especially when we compare ourselves to others who may be doing something similar (or doing something we'd rather be doing!)

That's why it's so important to stay focused on your own personal journey goals and not be distracted by what someone else is doing in the lane next to you. 🏊

Their journey history and obstacles will be VERY different from yours - so just because they seem further ahead in one area, doesn't mean you're behind!

They may well be approaching the Finale while you're still figuring out Act 1, Scene 3. And that's OK!

Remember, negative thoughts like "I'm behind" will always create negative actions and results. Read that again!

Whereas...

⭐HELPFUL THOUGHTS WILL CREATE HELPFUL ACTIONS AND RESULTS.⭐

My personal favourites include:

🔸 "I am EXACTLY where I should be"
🔸 "Now is the PERFECT TIME to start [name of task]"
🔸 "I have succeeded at other challenging tasks in the past"
🔸 "I am resourceful and have everything I need to finish this task in my own way"

Always aim to replace negative thoughts with HELPFUL thoughts; thoughts that will keep you moving at your own pace and in your own lane to complete the task or challenge.

❓: What HELPFUL thoughts do you tell yourself when those pesky comparisons to others sneak in? Share yours below! ⬇️

Do the tasks on your To-Do list pass the SMART Test? 🤓

[I've used my own (real) personal example below to show you how I've converted something open-ended like 'researching courses', into a tangible SMART task.]

When writing a to-do list we're very good at listing:

➡️ Things we feel we SHOULD do (but don't really see value in)
➡️ Never-ending tasks such as 'researching' or 'learning' ...
➡️ Tasks that are unnecessary to achieving the overall goal
➡️ Vague tasks where we "don't know where to start!"
➡️ Tasks which rely on others and don't sit wholly within our control

Sound familiar?

Humans are brilliant at overestimating what we can achieve in a day and underestimate what we can achieve in a month. This is partly because we don't clearly define, or know how to measure, our objectives.

This is where the SMART test comes in.

You've probably heard of SMART goals, but possibly never thought to apply it to your daily to-do tasks! Don't worry, before I came to coaching, I'd completely forgotten what the acronym stood for - or how it applied to me personally!

So to help you clean up your own to-do list, I've listed the steps below for you to run your own tasks through the following SMART-test:

⭐ NAME OF TASK:

⭐ S (specific): WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU WANT TO DO? Define the task and be specific here!

⭐ M (measurable): HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHEN IT IS COMPLETE? Describe how you will measure success.

⭐ A (achievable): IS THIS TASK 100% WITHIN YOUR CONTROL TO ACHIEVE? If not, consider who else needs to be involved.

⭐ R (relevant): WHAT WILL ACHIEVING THIS TASK REALLY GIVE YOU? Consider how relevant this task is in achieving your desired result. Does it really need to be done?

⭐ T (time-bound): WHEN WILL YOU COMPLETE IT BY? Remember that new tasks that you’ve never done before will take 10x longer and will be 20x more stressful than you first anticipate!

---- I'd love to know if you've found this checklist helpful, and if it's helped you shape your own to-do list tasks!! ❤️

BREAKING NEWS: I MADE MY FIRST VIDEO! 🎞️

I know - for some of you; this is not a big deal. For me - it's HUGE!

Back in December, I set myself the challenge of shooting an introductory video for the homepage of my website to explain in a nutshell the following:

➡ Who I am
➡ What Coaching Is
➡ How I can help creative people LIKE YOU get what you want in your life, business and career, on or off-stage.

So, why has it taken me until MAY to unveil it?

Well, let's talk about overcoming obstacles for a sec.

Do you know what my biggest obstacles have been over the past 5 months in relation to this video?

1️⃣ Myself.
2️⃣ My lack of confidence on camera.
3️⃣ Knowing nothing (zero, zilch) about video editing.

As it turns out - it's incredible what a phone, camera, we**am mic [and watching *many* hours of Youtube videos on how to edit using Premiere Pro!], can produce during a Pandemic ... 🤷‍♀️‍

SO - today marks a special day, because I've finally OVERCOME MY OBSTACLES and uploaded THE VIDEO.

Mic drop, if you will. 🎤

If you do want to watch it - you can find it here!

P.S. If you want to know the secret to how I summoned the courage to do this, I reminded myself daily that if this video helps just ONE person; it's totally worth it.

Who's with me on this one? 😅

(for the record, I didn't manage to get my WHOLE life together - but I *did* clear out a few cupboards and survived an IKEA trip with my husband ... that's close, right?)

This is one of my favourite phrases because it's a great reminder that our brains are biologically programmed to keep us safe (which means they often tell us little white lies to keep us from doing anything new and scary!)

This can most easily be spotted in our negative self-talk, for example:

➡️ I’m not good/smart/talented enough
➡️ I’m just not a confident person
➡️ I’m unlovable
➡️ I’ll never be able to do that

Negative phrases like these keep us in the safety of our comfort zones, but they're fundamentally NOT TRUE. Your negative thoughts are fake news, everybody!

Next time an unhelpful thought comes up for you, ask yourself:

⭐ What’s the source of that information, how old is your 'evidence' and how do you know whether you trust it to be true? ⭐

WHO ARE YOU, REALLY? 🕵️‍♀️

Take the *FREE PERSONALITY QUIZ* to find out now!

The quiz is designed using the Big5 psychometric model - it's based on actual science (I don't mess around 😋)

The five broad markers (often abbreviated by the mnemonic OCEAN) are:

🌊 Openness
🌊 Conscientiousness
🌊 Extroversion
🌊 Agreeableness
🌊 Neuroticism

Each factor consists of a cluster of more specific traits that correlate together to produce an overall picture of who you REALLY are!

It crossed my mind after an intense Youtube workout this morning, that while I always aim to "feel the burn" after a workout (mainly to justify the pizza I'm probably going to order that evening) - I try and avoid discomfort when it comes to practically any other area of my life!

Does anyone else find this?!

I like this quote by because it's a reminder that in order for us to keep building ourselves up (both physically and mentally) perhaps we need to aim to "feel the burn" in our lives, businesses and careers, just as much as we do when we hit the gym! 💪
