©People who have pain due to the suboccipital muscles don’t know where to locate the pain because it seems to spread throughout the whole head. They usually experience a deep and dull headache that reaches from the back of the head to the eyeballs. Some like to describe the pain as „moving deep” into the head. Dysfunctional suboccipital muscles will give you a hard time turning your head, especially when you have to turn your head far enough to check the blind spot while driving for example. Quick head movements can result in pinching and lightning pain. Occasionally people also notice a grinding, cracking or popping noise in the cervical joints when they move their heads. In some cases, it has been reported that tightness in the suboccipital muscles is associated with somatic symptom disorders. Furthermore, it seems to be very difficult to distinguish between suboccipital and semispinalis muscle pain, nevertheless, the suboccipital muscles are rarely the only tight muscles contributing to the discomfort.
