Immune supplements 🤧
Vitamin D3 🐟 An important modulator of the immune system that is difficult to obtain through food alone, especially in the winter months (its synthesized in our body via ☀️ exposure). I generally recommend 5000 IU daily in the dark months, but this can be customized to the individual based on lab findings. It is fat soluble so it’s important to be tested if wanting to take higher amounts.
Vitamin C 🍋 An antioxidant used to prevent & reduce duration of the cold & flu. The dose is 1000-3000 mg per day. This can be taken in capsule or powder. Vitamin IV’s are another way to get a high dose around cold & flu season. It is also found in citrus fruits & orange/yellow or leafy green vegetables.
Zinc citrate 🦪 Reduces colds & flu at doses between 30-60 mg per day. It can cause stomach upset so it’s important to take with food. If taking long term, it can deplete copper so look for a supplement containing a bit of both. Foods high in zinc include oysters/shellfish, nuts & meat.
Probiotics 🦠 Our gut is lined by healthy microbes that support digestion, mood & optimal immune function. Use a product that contains Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium strains. Keep these refrigerated. Food sources include kefir, sauerkraut & miso.
NAC 🫁 A mucolytic agent used for productive coughs and lung congestion. It’s also an awesome antioxidant and great for the liver (especially if you’ve been consuming a few to many Tylenol lately). For acute uses it’s generally dosed at 500mg 3x daily.
Vitamin A 🎣 Strongly supportive to the immune system, especially if the lungs are involved (cough, congestion). Cod liver oil is high in vitamin A & can be taken daily during the cold & flu season. This is also far soluble, so high doses should be used with caution (or for short periods).
Note: The recommended doses above are for adults, not children. I recommend consulting a healthcare professional to find the best supplements, brands & doses for you.
