ANATOMY LOVERS, this ones for you!!!!
It is widely known that Intercostals aid in ❤️inhalation && 💙exhalation. Both sets are located in the spaces between the ribs. They help stabilize the spinal joints and are connected to the Deep Front Fascial Line.
The 💛EXTERNAL Intercostals lay on top of the 💚INTERNAL Intercostals. The fancy science word for that is “superficial.” External lies superficial to Internal.
It’s hard to tell what the difference is between these musles and even harder for your health care practictioners to differentiate between the two. I find it easier to distinguish between the two based on “direction”.

💛EXTERNAL INTERCOSTALS attach from the BOTTOM of the 1st rib and attach to the TOP of the 2nd rib and so on and so on. When this set of muscle contract, they ELEVATE ribs 2 - 12 at the sternocostal and costospinal joints (fancy names for joints between sternum/ribs and spine/ribs) and aid in ❤️Inhalation.
đź’šINTERNAL INTERCOSTALS attach from the TOP of the 12th rib to the BOTTOM of the 11th rib and so on and so on. These guys together DEPRESS ribs 1 - 11 at the sternocostal and costospinal joints. đź’™ Exhalation usually is a passive movement, changing with pressures in the chest, abdominal and pelvic cavities. BUT these đź’šINTERNAL Intercostals are said to aid in đź’™FORCED EXHALATION.
