Ski injuries are one of the most common seasonal sports injuries seen in physiotherapy clinics across Australia, particularly during pre-travel conditioning for overseas snow seasons.
Most ski injuries are not random trauma — they are predictable biomechanical injuries caused by:
reduced quadriceps strength
poor single-leg stability
fatigue-related loss of control
inadequate pre-season conditioning
The most common injuries include ACL tears, MCL sprains, wrist fractures, shoulder dislocations, and lower back strains.
From a physiotherapy perspective, the biggest modifiable risk factor is fatigue combined with poor neuromuscular control.
Pre-season ski preparation should include:
strength training (quads, glutes, hamstrings)
single-leg stability work
balance and proprioception training
fatigue resistance conditioning
If you are travelling from Sydney or elsewhere in Australia for ski season, a pre-season physiotherapy assessment can identify movement and strength deficits before injury occurs.
