"Euphoric"? "South East Asian origin"? 🤦😅

As misinformed as this report is on kava and its status or roll out here in Australia is, there are more serious topics at hand to point out that I can gather from this.

Fortunately for us in the capital, Kava is classified as a food already here in the ACT already with the only approved imports of Kava into this country (soon to change end of this year) only possible via scientific or medicinal purposes as has been doing in recent years.

In saying this, as the market will open up and Kava as a 'food' is commercially imported into Australia very soon; I believe it is on our own Pasifika people to be ambassadors as to how Kava should be used in a socialcultural context 💯 if not, it won't take long for the true sociocultural benefits of Kava to be lost in amongst misappropriation & misconstruing of its use, with only a sole focus on achieving a Kava 'buzz' rather than for its holistic value.

We should be championing for Kava consumption to be used the way it has always worked with principle and values; as much of the anti anxiety & mental health benefits of Kava in research are more evident from socialcultural Kava consumption and not just by 'popping a pill' by yourself at home as this video mentions.

Of course Kava has shown its growing economic value and provided much opportunity for our people, as with many other Pasifika crops and goods. But let's hope as ambassadors of Kava and passionate Kava users in the industry, that we don't lose it's holistic values either in amongst the profit of the predicted lucrative Australian Kava Market 🤷

As the months draw nearer to the Australian Kava pilot program, here is a throwback to The National Kava Forum 2021 hosted by Fair Canberra Inc, pre lockdown here in Canberra 🔥😌

Special appearances were made by internationally renowned Kava researchers and scientific experts; Dr Apo Aporosa & Dr Jerome Sarris, who both had huge contributions on the night 💯 Along with other Pasifika community Kava advocates based in the capital, it was a memorable collaborative consultation with various departments of the Australian government (mainly Health and DFAT) 🙌

Guest of honour was Minister for International Development and The Pacific, Senator Zed Seselja, who got to enjoy some Kava along with his colleagues with Kalapu Fofoanga Canberra also! ✌️

It was amazing to see The Office of the Pacific present; with the ambassadors from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa & Second Secretary from Tonga there in full support, their contributions were immense! ✊

Special shout out to Jordie Kilby from for moderating the Kava Panel and Dr Siaosi Carter for MCing the night 💯🙏

I may have missed many, but equally important, was seeing the different multicultural community groups & ACT Pasifika groups that came in support, including Kalapu Fofoanga ACT 😌

Despite ongoing restrictions, Kavas popularity only continues to grow in Australia! 🔥

With coverage via mainstream media, social media, and increasing Kava consumption/demand at the grass roots level; one can only imagine the potential for the Kava industry here in Australia 🙌 Lockdown hasn't made it easy for Kava communities across Australia's main cities, however the demand is seemingly stronger than ever 💪

After years on the back foot here, it's only fair that the Pacific Kava Industry has an opportunity to take a well deserved foothold in this potentially lucrative Australian Kava market 💯💯 Geographically speaking, we're in the same neighbourhood after all! 🤷😄

Hopefully this provides many benefits for all, from the farmers right to the Kava circles 🔥🔥 Although future risks will always present itself, we are definitely excited for what's in store for the Kava community and of course, more Kava sessions!! 😌👌

Over the years, there has been a lot of groundwork advocating for Kava to be recognised and/or freely available in Australia as it is in other countries e.g. New Zealand, where Kava is a 'food'.

In addition to this, Canberra held the National Kava Forum 2021 (event hosted by Fair Canberra Inc.) in conjunction with Pasifika community organisations and Australian government ministers & representatives, both local and federal. A lot of progress was made and we are very optimistic about how that looks moving forward into the Kava pilot program in Australia from 2022 😁🤙

For now, we can continue giving all the attention Kava deserves here in Australia after many years under restriction - watch this space! 🙌😀

Kava use is a treasured practice when used positively 💯

Kava (aka Yaqona, Ava, Awa, Sakau, Malok, Malongu etc) and it's consumption has lasted thousands of years in the Pacific Region, and for good reason 👌 From ceremonial use to socialised use; Kava consumption and Talanoa (conversation/dialogue) around the Kava bowl is a medium for cultural learning, fellowship, networking, peace of mind and so forth 😁 Whether you like a strong mix, or a weak one, most kava users would agree that the 'connections' you make around the bowl are usually the most cherished moments of a 'Kava Sesh' 😌💯 Definitely something for everyone, no matter where you're from it's universal 🙏

What are the 'not so positive' uses of Kava? Well, pretty much treating like it's something that it's not, aka alcohol, drugs, and/or other thrill seeking substances etc. There's a common knowledge in the Pacific that Kava has 'Mana', and you usually get out what you put in when using it. Treat it out of context, you won't find that 'trip' so to speak. Treat it with respect? Magic happens 🙌🙂

With a lot to look forward to at the end of the year for the Kava industry in Australia, although many are aware of the 'Kava drink' here, many still don't know what Kava actually is and the best ways it should be used 🤷

I guess it'll be good to start by saying a few simple points about what it isn't instead:

- Kava is not an alcohol/alcoholic
- Kava is not a hallucinogen
- Kava does not get you 'high' like other illicit drugs per se, but instead eases and calms the mind & body
- Kava is not unsafe for consumption, and is not harmful for your liver

When consumed traditionally (water + kava), there are many ways to enjoy it and numerous benefits that can arise by consuming this ancient beverage 😁🤙 our future posts will cover this 🙌😀

Hopefully 2021 is the year Kava will be classed as a food not only in the ACT (Canberra) but Australia wide, so we can all enjoy the positive benefits of Kava down under!! 😄🙏

The restricted status of Kava in Australia has adversely impacted on many pacific communities across Australia especially during this past year with Covid-19 closing our borders. To date, there is enough quality research in various disciplines by both Pasifika and Non-Pasifika academics that continues to support the positive benefits and safety of Kava consumption, especially when compared to the impact of alcohol and other substances in our Pasifika communities. The benefits will also spill over into the grass roots Kava industry, Pacific wide! 🙌
