Sleep is usually the first thing PTSD takes and the last thing to come back.

A few things that tend to help, none of which require buying anything:

Get up at the same time every day, even after a bad night. Wake time anchors the whole system. Bedtime doesn't.

If you're lying there awake past twenty minutes or so, get up. Go sit somewhere dim and boring until you're actually sleepy. Staying in bed frustrated teaches your brain that bed is where you fight.

Keep the room cold and dark, and put the phone across the room.

None of this is dramatic and none of it works overnight. Sleep tends to come back slowly, in a way you only notice looking backward a few weeks later.

If nightmares are the main problem, that's worth bringing to a therapist directly. There are specific approaches for it.

Avoidance is the best short-term deal in town and the worst long-term one.

You skip the crowded store, and the anxiety drops. Immediately. Your brain notices that and files it as a win. So next time it suggests skipping again, a little louder.

Repeat that for a year and the list of places you don't go keeps growing. The relief never lasts longer than the errand you didn't run.

Nobody avoids things because they're weak. Avoidance works, which is exactly the problem. It pays out fast.

Getting out of that loop usually isn't about forcing yourself into the deep end. It's about going back slowly, with support, in a way you can actually tolerate. That's a normal thing to want help with.

Your body will get ahead of your brain sometimes. Heart rate climbs, jaw locks, and the room feels smaller. Nothing actually happened. Your nervous system just made a call without consulting you.

One thing that helps in that moment is giving your senses a job.

Look around and find five things you can see. Then four you can touch. Three you can hear. Two you can smell. One you can taste. Say them out loud if you can.

It sounds almost too simple to work. That's sort of the point. You're not arguing with the alarm, you're giving your brain something concrete to hold onto until the wave passes.

Some people find it helps. Some don't, and that's real information too, not a failure.

If things get heavier than a grounding exercise can carry, call or text 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.

People hear "EMDR" and picture something mystical. It isn't.

Here's the plain version. When something traumatic happens, your brain sometimes doesn't finish filing it. The memory stays raw and loaded, so a smell or a sound in a parking lot can drop you right back into it. EMDR uses guided eye movements or taps while you hold that memory, and it gives your brain another shot at filing it properly.

The memory doesn't disappear. You still know what happened. It just stops ambushing you.

It's structured, it's evidence-based, and your therapist is with you the whole way. If you've been putting off looking into it because it sounded strange, that's fair. Most people feel that way until someone explains it in English.
