Caregiver Warrior Blogger, author, speaker and caregiver advocate. Survive the caregiving journey with grace and power. "Warriors are not what you think of as warriors.

The warrior is not someone who fights....The warrior is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity." - Sitting Bull

I have a tendency to think anything that feels extremely good or extremely bad will be sticking around forever.

It’s the fear of and belief that these circumstances and feelings will last into my future. They will greet me tomorrow with the same joys or challenges.

We all know it simply doesn’t work that way, but this awful habit of believing that there is a permanence to anything really trips me up.

I am devastated that the good stuff seems to be missing today or that the bad stuff will stick around tomorrow.

Life is a seesaw.

I forget I got on it to feel the joy of the going up and the thrill dropping down.

I completely forget that it’s a ride and I’m lucky to be on it.

After my brain surgery, I was frustrated and frightened with how slowly I was healing and how thrown off I was.

A kind and wise doctor told me to be more gentle with myself because I was simply recalibrating and that takes time.

Such a sense of relief washed over me because not only did that make sense, it felt so true and most importantly, a great reason to relax and be spending.

You are recalibrating! After my brain surgery, I was frustrated and frightened with how slowly I was healing and how thrown off I was.

A kind and wise doctor told me to be more gentle with myself because I was simply recalibrating and that takes time.

Such a sense of relief washed over me because not only did that make sense, it felt so true.

I needed to relax.

My body and soul were making adjustments and they would get me back on track.

Caregiving can be just as traumatizing as well. There are what seems to be a million adjusts and calculations we have to make. Some are immediate and some just come with the territory on a daily basis.

As caregivers we need to breathe and remember that making changes and adjustments as we go along takes time.

We are recalibrating.

Give yourself the space, the time, the gentleness and the trust that balance is on it way.

1. Taking a moment at various points throughout the day to check in on what you are feeling and how you are feeling is extremely important. I call this taking your emotional temperature. Asking yourself if you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired (HALT) allows you to stop, evaluate your state of mind and body, and take care of yourself if you answer yes to any of the questions.

2. The very act of reaching out to talk to someone, rather than keeping it all bottled up and in our heads, helps us release tension and stress. Having someone sympathize with us or even listen can validate our feelings, helping us process them positively. We feel less isolated and crazy. Getting our feelings out into the open instead of stuffing them in, where they can fester and explode without warning, can greatly reduce the likelihood of explosive anger and frustration. We gain a much better perspective sometimes just by saying things out loud.

3. Go easy on yourself. No one is perfect. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. Life is complex, and caregivers are especially vulnerable to the emotional side effects of caring for others. The caregiver journey is demanding, overwhelming, and intense; emotions run high.

When I am with one of my dear Caregiver Warrior friends and stand in their journey with them, I am overwhelmed with trying to fix everything for them. I want to make it all ok.

I can’t.

I can’t fix, control, or change their journey or what they are going through.

My heart breaks open, I feel helpless, grief washes over me and I stumble.

My discomfort comes from a caring place but doesn’t help any of us.

It’s something I need to sit in and turn it into a quiet, calm, outpouring of love.

They know I care and don’t need me to fix anything.

They need me to be steadfast and solid, letting them know I see them, and that they are safe to be open with how they feel.

That I am there.

With no expectations.

That I love them, I am in awe of them and that I understand.

It’s hurts so much for all of us.

My job is to let them know they are not alone. No matter what.

That is the most sacred way to meet the moment.

I can hem and haw and avoid giving an answer because I haven’t made a decision or don’t know an answer.

I can blame it on caregiver burnout or exhaustion or feeling overwhelmed, and all of those things do cause us to struggle with communication.

However, it’s usually about a bad habit I’ve developed due to my perfectionism to avoid looking clueless or stupid.

I’m learning to simply say, I don’t know the answer or I need to think about that for a bit and make a decision which I’ll share with you as soon as I can.

When I know how I’m feeling, need to say something, or clear things up, I need to make the space to share that clearly, openly and as soon as I can.

I don’t have to have the all the answers, have made all the decisions, or understanding everything myself.

I just have to be open to letting everyone know where I stand and that I’m working on it.

Being clear and truthful and taking the time to let others know what’s going on does take effort but the pay off is priceless.

Everybody gets on the same page, people understand how I’m feeling and what their part is and I learn the sky doesn’t fall on my head if I’m completely upfront!

Caregiving, clarity, communication.

Golden C’s.

Grief doesn’t have en expiration date. It takes its own sweet time. We have no control over that at all.

No one can tell us how and when to grieve or how long it should take us to find our way around the loss we feel.

Our grief is as unique as we are.

So we all dance with it to our own music and tempo.

Grief will weave in and out, pause and continue, surprise us, be loud and sometimes quiet.

It’s a mystery and hard to understand.

But the depth of it is in complete alignment with the amount of love we had for what and who we lost.

It is a reminder that we loved hard and so we grieve hard.

Grief is as sacred as the love lost that summoned it.

Which makes it so hard to comprehend and so powerful in the way it makes us feel.

Take your time and be gentle with yourself as you grieve.

It’s big.
