blue VERVAIN // Verbena hastata is the medicine I think of for the people who are always carrying the world on their shoulders. The perfectionists. The overachievers. The ones who hold themselves—and often everyone around them—to incredibly high standards. The minds that have trouble letting go, replaying conversations, organizing, fixing, improving, striving.
By day, that constant inner drive can look productive. By night, it often looks like a mind that won’t turn off. They likely don’t even report feeling stressed about it, they just have so much they want to get done, it’s the norm. It’s one we typically dose during the day, to lighten the perfectionist load and allow their systems to more ready to ease into rest later, versus a classic nighttime sedative or relaxant.
Vervain has long been considered a wonderful ally for those with anxious, perfectionistic, even obsessive tendencies. The kind of person who feels they should always be doing more, being more, or getting it just right (even when they are doing SO much SO well).
That relentless under current of tension often shows up in the body too: clenched jaws, teeth grinding, headaches, and chronically tight neck and upper back muscles. One of my teachers used the memorable keynote of “military neck”—like a soldier standing at rigid attention, unable to soften.
We also need to mention how vervain grows. The tiny flowers bloom along long, slender spikes, opening gradually from the base toward the tip. They remind me of a spine slowly unwinding—an invitation to soften, release, and let go of carrying everything so tightly.
Sometimes the people who need vervain most are the very ones who would never admit how much pressure they’re under… even to themselves.
