Sepsis Awareness Month: Know the Connection to Spina Bifida

For people with Spina Bifida, several types of infections can be a health concern, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin and wound infections, and shunt-related infections.

During Sepsis Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the connection between sepsis and these types of health concerns, which can be more common among people with Spina Bifida.

Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection and is a life-threatening medical emergency. It can develop from a problem that begins in the urinary tract, skin or a wound, or around a medical device such as a shunt.

For some people with Spina Bifida, certain warning signs may be less obvious or may present differently, making it especially important to recognize what is normal for your body and to be aware of any changes.

While a UTI, skin or wound infection, or shunt-related infection is NOT sepsis, symptoms that worsen require attention.
Recognizing changes early and seeking appropriate medical care are important steps for protecting your health.

💙 The 2026 Roll N’ Stroll is almost here! 💙

We’re counting down to one of our favorite days of the year! Join us Saturday, September 19 from 9:30 AM–1:00 PM at Zionsville Lions Park for the 2026 Roll N’ Stroll. It’s a day to roll, stroll, eat, laugh, connect and spend time with the incredible Spina Bifida Indiana community.

We’ll have the Roll N’ Stroll, lunch, face painting, presenter activities, the Zionsville Nature Center TrailHopper, resource and community partner tables, and plenty of time to connect with other individuals and families.

September is Hydrocephalus Awareness Month and Sepsis Awareness Month — two observances that are especially important to the community that we serve.

Hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain, affects many people with Spina Bifida, and about 60–80% need a shunt to help manage it. People with Spina Bifida may also face a higher risk of urinary tract, shunt-related, and skin infections. If one becomes severe, it can lead to sepsis, the body’s extreme, life-threatening response that can damage tissues and organs.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing more about hydrocephalus and sepsis, how they can affect people with Spina Bifida, and why early recognition of the signs of a potential problem is critical.

Awareness gives people the knowledge to recognize changes, ask questions, and advocate for their health.
