A trip behind the laboratory doors can change how a young patient sees their blood tests.

Finn and his mum Amy joined Biomedical Scientist Gayle for a Harvey’s Lab Tour, giving Finn the chance to see what happens to his samples and meet the people working behind the scenes.

Theo got stuck into plenty of laboratory activities during his Harvey’s Lab Tour at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary 🔬

He tried pipetting, spotted funny emoji-like faces in a blood film and created his own pretend ‘Mickey Mouse’ blood sample.

Even his penguin Woody joined in with a trip through the hospital’s pneumatic tube system.

Ollie had LOTS of questions for the team at Poole Hospital! 🔬

After years of having regular blood tests, his lab tour gave him the chance to follow his samples behind the scenes – and get hands-on with some of the science himself. 🧪🥼

His mum hopes seeing what happens to his blood will help make future tests a little less scary. 💙

Teddy kept the Blood Sciences team on their toes during his Harvey’s Lab Tour at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Seven year old Teddy followed the journey of his samples through the lab, saw his own blood film under the microscope and learnt more about blood and platelets.

He also impressed the team with his knowledge, spotting a cell that wasn’t included on his morphology chart. They might need the advanced version ready next time!

Collaboration is one of the things that makes Harvey's Lab Tours so special. 💙

During Alice and Florence's visit to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, the team also welcomed Stephanie from Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, who is preparing to launch Harvey's Lab Tours in her own laboratory.

"We had a very special moment when Sue told Alice that the blood we were looking at was hers. It was quite emotional," said Biomedical Scientist Gayle Johnstone.

Matthew recently visited the labs at NHS Grampian for a Harvey's Lab Tour, where he spent the day finding out what happens to his blood samples after they're taken.

Dressed in his very own lab coat with his trainee ID badge, Matthew made model blood samples, looked at blood cells under the microscope and met the biomedical scientists who help care for patients every day.

Thank you to Megan and the whole team for making Matthew and his mum feel so welcome and for bringing the laboratory to life.

Meet Mireille 👋

She's always wondered what happens to her samples after they're taken, so the team at Royal United Hospital Bath showed her exactly what goes on behind the laboratory doors.

Along the way she made a blood film, looked at blood cells under the microscope, had a go with pipettes and even topped up laboratory analysers!

Mireille hopes to become a doctor or scientist one day, so we hope this was just the beginning of her scientific journey 🔬

A huge welcome to Isle of Wight NHS Trust 💙

Deezul has become the very first young patient to take part in a Harvey's Lab Tour at St Mary's Hospital. Collecting his very own lab coat and ID badge at reception, Deezuul stepped behind the laboratory doors to learn about what happens to a blood sample, try blood grouping, use a pipette and even look down a microscope 🔬

We can't wait to see many more children and families enjoy Harvey's Lab Tours on the Isle of Wight.

Congratulations to Chloe Aman and the team at University Hospital Southampton, winners of the Harvey's Lab Tour of the Year Award at the IBMS Awards 2026. 🎉

Over the past few years, Chloe has helped create unforgettable tours for dozens of young patients and their families, always taking the time to shape each tour around what matters most to them.

When Tomás and Louis visited the laboratory earlier this year, a question about how factor VIII helps blood clot led Chloe and the team to adapt the tour and arrange a visit to the coagulation department, giving the family a chance to actually see the analysers used to run the tests they rely on. On other tours, patients have been able to view their own blood cells under the microscope, helping them make sense of tests that are often a routine part of their healthcare.

In her staff spotlight last year, Chloe shared her belief that "the patient will remember the amazing day that focused on what mattered to them." That patient-first approach has become a hallmark of Harvey's Lab Tours at Southampton.

This year's judges praised the programme as a "very well-designed" experience with a sensitive focus on patients' needs, recognising the team's commitment to answering questions, adapting activities and creating meaningful experiences for every family who visits.

Congratulations to Chloe and the entire University Hospital Southampton team on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for everything you continue to do for Harvey's Lab Tours.
