Putting the Bio in Canadian Biomanufacturing. — By eduardo Longoria.

“One of the things to remember is Canada no longer has any domestic production capacity for vaccines. We used to have it decades ago, but we no longer have it.”

The meaning of this statement by Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is never more relevant than in the midst of a global pandemic. This statement was made last month in reference to Canada’s need for COVID-19 vaccines and plans to provide for the Canadian population as well as commit to building the nation’s manufacturing capabilities.

Spotlight: How Does the Human Gut Microbiota Affect Immune Cell Dynamics? — By Eduardo Longoria.

An article published recently in the journal Nature reported findings on how the gut microbiota influences the development and maintenance of the mammalian immune system. Our understanding of how the immune system is modulated remains limited, particularly in humans, where the difficulty of direct experimentation makes the inference challenging. Despite these difficulties, the study managed to find valuable insights regarding three bacterial genera.

“The scientific community had already accepted the idea that the gut microbiota was important for the health of the human immune system, but the data they used to make that assumption came from animal studies,” said Dr. Joao Xavier, co-senior author of the study.

Ginkgo Receives $1.1B from the US Government to Fight Pandemics. — Eduardo Longoria.

Boston-based Ginkgo Bioworks has received a $1.1 billion investment from the US government’s International Development Finance Corp (DFC) for COVID-19 testing and the production of raw materials to fight pandemics in the future. Ginkgo is currently responsible for the production of components for Moderna’s messenger RNA vaccine and coronavirus tests.

“Because we haven’t faced a global pandemic in 100 years, we haven’t had a global biosecurity infrastructure,” Ginkgo Chief Executive Officer Jason Kelly said in an interview. “What excites me about this loan is that we can help to build it.”

Genomics Companies Form an Alliance with Microsoft for DNA Data Storage. — By Eduardo Longoria.

On November 12th, California-based Twist Biosciences, Illumina, Microsoft, and Western Digital announced the launching of a joint effort with 11 other companies to advance the field of DNA data storage. The alliance aims to create an industry roadmap to establish the foundations for a commercial file storage ecosystem to accommodate the explosive growth of digital data and mitigate the negative effects of that demand.



Demands of Data Storage
It is estimated that by 2024, 30% of digital businesses will require DNA storage trials as a means of addressing the amount of data relative to available storage space. Since the year 2010 (according to Statista), the global demand for storage has outstripped the supply by an increasing amount until the current year, with 18,100 exabytes of excess data in need of storage. Not only does this short supply of storage space drive up the costs, but it comes with economic and environmental constraints as well.

An estimated 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to data centers and their high power demand. This same power demand leads to higher electricity costs in places where they are concentrated.

New Cas9 Alternatives Give Mammoth Biosciences an Edge Over Other CRISPR companies. — By Eduardo Longoria.

Genome editing is the process by which researchers make targeted changes to an organism’s DNA. While there are various technologies for genome editing, the process has become dramatically easier since the advent of CRISPR/Cas9 technology in 2012. The Cas (cellular apoptosis susceptibility) proteins are part of the CAS/CSE protein family, including yeast chromosome-segregation protein, CSE1. They are relatively easy to target specific DNA sequences and work in many organisms.

EXCLUSIVO: Força-tarefa aposta no sequenciamento de DNA para dimensionar impacto das queimadas no Pantanal.

Essa continuidade, no entanto, depende de apoio, inclusive para determinar o tamanho da área mapeada. Até o momento, o GenomicLab, como foi batizado o consórcio, conta a colaboração de 30 pesquisadores das áreas de ecologia, zoologia, botânica e genética de 11 universidades e institutos, de uma série de entidades, como a Sociedade Brasileira de Genética e o Centro de Pesquisa do Pantanal, e de três outras empresas além das startups catarinenses: Portunus Biotech, Atlantis Biotecnologia e Sinapse Biotecnologia.

“Na metade do ano já teremos o sequenciamento das primeiras amostras”, prevê Luiz Felipe. “Mas o objetivo da iniciativa é muito ambicioso, uma vez que passa pela reconstrução das áreas afetadas, algo que tem um potencial imenso para a região.”

On September 29th, Dewpoint Therapeutics, the biomolecular condensates company, announced raising US$ 77 million in a Series B round led by ARCH Venture Partners. The round saw participation from new investors Maverick Ventures and Bellco Capital and existing investors Leaps by Bayer, EcoR1 Capital, Polaris Partners, Samsara BioCapital, and Innovation Endeavors. The privately held, small (around 50 employees) and recently founded (2018) firm had its US$ 60 million Series A in early 2019 and is demonstrating strong growth. ⠀

Founded by Tony Hyman of the Max Planck Institute in Dresden and Rick Young of the Whitehead Institute, Dewpoint therapeutics, as described on their website, translates condensate biology into much needed medicines. The company, based both in Boston and Dresden, is attempting to develop drugs to hit “undruggable” targets. ⠀

Co-fundadora e diretora científica de duas biotechs: Portunus e Solarpunk Labs. A Portunus foi criada em 2017 e atualmente está implementando uma planta piloto com 108 biorreatores no Biopark, no Paraná.
