Before and after one ride.

Getting back on Poco I’ve really been focusing on how every ride to make improvements in her body. I check in with her posture and the feel of her muscles after every ride.

One cool improvement has been the straightness in her spine and her engagement up into her withers, as you can see from the photo.

If you can’t see improvement after your rides there might be something going on or that you need to fix.

Horses should be able to find a posture where their lower neck is relaxed and jiggly.

Please do not attempt to jiggle their neck if you’re not sure if it’s fully relaxed, if tense this can be very painful

Results after one nerve release session! Sometimes issues with contact can be from tension or a connection issue, both of which I work through during my sessions.

If your horse has an issue with contact it may be time for some bodywork or a lesson in bit releases 💕

Sometimes the gentlest techniques can give the biggest results!

One of the first places horses often compensate is their neck. If they are having pain in their lower limb their neck will be tighter.

Last week I worked on a horse whose feet were just a little sore after a trim. I felt a significant difference in the tightness of their neck. The foot soreness could really only be seen as more discomfort than usual on the gravel driveway, but it was creating discomfort in the neck even in the sandy arena. This can be a testament to how great compensators horses can be. Often when we see a visual limp the pain is quite severe. Mild discomforts will just lead to compensation that can easily be hidden.

Just another reason to make sure your horse is in some sort of bodywork program, to help them through these discomforts before they become a bigger problem.

Most people, I think attribute older horses to needing bodywork. Which obviously is important for them, considering the work they are in, the wear and compensations they already have in their bodies.

What some think is that younger horses don’t need bodywork. I hear people say “they are young, they shouldn’t be in pain.” But the reality is this is the perfect time for bodywork to set their bodies up to be better when they are older. To help them through acute tensions and compensations before they are chronic and it becomes harder to relieve. It can help support them through starting as a ridden horse and even with some basic things as learning to hold their feet up for the farrier.

I’m very happy that I currently have quite a few young horse clients that have been under saddle for only a short period of time or are just starting out riding. These owners have told me they want to support their horses as they are learning so they can make sure they aren’t creating any long term issues during this process. Which honestly, I think is the perfect way to start out a horse 💕

If you have a young horse reach out to me to see how bodywork and postural exercises can help!

Riding should be improving our horses bodies.

This before and after is from one lesson during the Ridden Nerve Release Course I just started. The difference is after just focusing on connection with the bridle. The main difference I could see and feel was her pushing up better from the ground and into her withers. Finding her thoracic sling just a little bit easier ❤️

The other day I was at the barn and two young riders were there, both around 10-12 years old. I had previously given them exercises to help with their pony’s proprioception and holding up her legs. When they were done riding, the girls finished up their barn time with the exercises I gave them a couple months ago, with no reminder from me.

It was so nice to see them so dedicated at a young age to their pony’s comfort and not just their riding time. It just made me so happy watching them practice, and I can say the pony has been better with lifting her legs so it’s working!

So this is your sign to be like those girls and continue with the groundwork and exercises that might not be as fun. It’ll help with the fun stuff in the long run. 💕
