Grief doesn’t clock off when we do.

If grief is affecting our concentration, sleep, decisions, energy or awareness, those effects don’t magically disappear when we leave work.

And childlessness can carry profound grief that workplaces may never recognise.

So what happens when we take that grief to work with us?

That’s what I’ll be exploring during World Childless Week:

Childlessness: A Disenfranchised Grief in the Workplace

I’ll be talking about the impact grief can have on how we function, what workplaces might see and misunderstand, and why we need a broader understanding of workplace grief.

I’ll also share a little of my own experience of carrying grief into a high risk working environment.

What if we stopped thinking of grief as something that only follows death?

August is often recognised as a time to raise awareness of grief, with National Grief Awareness Day falling on 30 August.

And one of the things I value most about grief awareness is the opportunity to acknowledge that grief can follow any significant loss.

The death of someone we love.

The loss of a relationship.

A change in our health.

A career we can no longer continue.

A home.

A role or identity that once shaped our lives.

Infertility.

Childlessness.

Or the future we thought we were going to have.

These losses don’t always come with a funeral, sympathy cards or support from friends and family, and sometimes there isn’t even a word for what we have lost. That kind of loss can make the grief incredibly lonely.

This is why I believe we need to normalise conversations about grief and reduce the stigma around talking about loss. We don’t need to compare losses or decide which ones are important or significant enough. We need to recognise that when something matters to us and it is lost, grief may be part of the experience.

That is at the heart of the work I do, creating space for people to acknowledge the losses that aren’t always visible, and helping them find a way forward without having to minimise what they have lost.

Grief deserves an open conversation, whatever the loss.

You can wake up every day wishing your story had been different and still choose to engage with the life that is in front of you💖

Are you choosing to live again?

Sometimes, in grief, even those words can feel overwhelming

When you’re surviving hour to hour, “living again” can sound like an impossible destination.

What if we made it smaller? What if, for today, we simply chose ourselves?

A meal.
A phone call.
A walk.
A moment of laughter without guilt.

Perhaps those small choices are how we begin to rebuild a meaningful life.

You don’t have to live fully today.

You can simply choose yourself. 💛

One of the biggest myths about grief is that if you begin living fully again, you’ve somehow left your grief behind.

I don’t believe that’s true, I think we carry grief with us.

And we can also carry hope.

We can carry sadness and laughter, hope and purpose, loss and joy.

They’re not opposites, they are companions.

Being childless not by choice doesn’t mean your grief disappears, neither does it mean your life has to stop.

Your story changed, your worth didn’t.

And your life still deserves to be lived.

💛 If no one has told you that lately, let this be your reminder.

National Grief Awareness day

NGA gives us an opportunity to normalise conversations about loss, break the societal stigma around bereavement, and to recognise that grief has no fixed timeline.

This day gives validation to all types of loss: from the death of a loved one, job loss, health changes, relationship endings, or altered life expectations.

Let’s open the conversation around grief of all origins, and lift that taboo that has historically often led to shame and embarrassment. 💞
