let’s break this down…

One: this is all about correcting your circadian rhythm. I worked in the service industry for over a decade and it destroyed my circadian rhythm and this piece - getting morning sunlight in my eyeballs - helped my circadian rhythm normalize.

Two: When ATP (our energy currency) breaks down, it releases adenosine into the brain and it builds up in the space between the brain cells. This DRIVES sleep. It makes us sleepy! So the more you move, the more sleep drive you’ll have. For me, if I end up sitting all day - like on a long road trip - I typically have trouble sleeping that night. When I’m consistently lifting, climbing, hiking, etc. I sleep like a bebe.

Three: blood sugar regulation, y’all! Protein is satiating and vital to balancing blood sugar. Balanced blood sugar keeps us asleep. When it’s imbalanced, we might experience a blood sugar drop in the middle of the night and wake up. Protein is also the building block of our entire body, our hormones, our neurotransmitters, immunoglobulins, and even regulate gene expression. The next time someone says “protein isn’t that important” you can confidently *giggle* and tell them they’re wrong.

Four: blue light at night interrupts/impairs our sleep/wake cycle and blocks melatonin production. Melatonin is the hormone that makes a sleepy and prepares us for rest. So throw on those blue light blockers, light some candles, dim or change your light bulbs. You’ll be shocked at how much this helps!

Now, like I said, nuance matters here. If you’re doing all these things and still not sleeping, there’s something else going on. And figuring that out on your own can be supremely frustrating. I’d love to help you get to the bottom of it. ♥️ Send me a message if you want to learn more.

If you’ve tried any of these, what helps the most?

Give these things a go…

+ Getting adequate sleep helps keep our nervous system at an evener keel which improves digestion. Prioritize it!

+ Drinking less water at meals is alllll about optimizing stomach acid. I’m going to preach this for-ev-er: stomach acid is necessary to properly break down foods. When we’re going into it with low stomach acid to begin with (which most of us are), the body will have a hard time producing more when we’re drinking loads of water with our meals. I try to stick to 8 ounces or less at meals.

+ This one has everything to do with gut motility and the MMC - migrating motor complex. The MMC, in simplest terms, helps move contents of the stomach and small intestine down to the bowel so it can exit the body. It’s basically a housekeeper! It keeps us “regular”. And it only happens IN BETWEEN meals. The entire process can take up to 230 minutes - almost 4 hours. It’s important that we allow this to happen because when we don’t it can lead to things like SIBO, constipation and even leaky gut. SO! Eat fuller meals with balanced macronutrients so that you can go 3-4 hours before eating another meal to allow for this process to take place. Eating those fuller meals with more balanced macros will also reduce the need to snack! AND it balances blood sugar. SO many benefits here, people!

+ Cooked veggies are easier on your gut! Plain and simple. And it makes nutrients more available for the body to absorb and use. Also though! Added bonus: Cooking cruciferous vegetables (kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, etc) especially decreases the goitrogens in those vegetables that might interfere with the function of the thyroid gland. Hard pass on the regular kale salads.

Here’s what you need to know 👇🏼:

Skin issues like acne vulgaris (cystic acne), psoriasis, eczema, urticaria, and atopic dermatitis are likely stemming from an unhealthy gut.

No gut symptoms you say? Well, the gut-skin axis tells us that your unhealthy gut can show up on your SKIN. So, if you’re thinking you’re in the clear because you don’t have typical GI symptoms, but are suffering through chronic or recurrent inflammatory skin conditions, think again.

The research says…

“Many human and animal studies suggest that the intestinal microbiome’s influence extends beyond the gut, and in fact contributes to the function, and dysfunction, of distant organ systems.”

“Through its influence on the signaling pathways that coordinate this process essential to skin homeostasis, the gut microbiome impacts integumentary health.”

⚡️ The nervous system is intricately connected to our digestive system and we need to be in a parasympathetic, rest and digest state to properly digest our food. Start tending to your nervous system NOW if you’re aiming to heal your gut. Sit with nature, listen to the birds, go on easy walks, go to therapy, stop watching the news, the list goes on.
⚡️ Sorry to say it - probiotics are NOT a cure all, my friends. Are they an important piece? Sure! But there are LAYERS to fully healing the gut. And you’ll be wasting time and money by just adding a probiotic without understanding what you actually NEED. (This is what I love about the labs I run for clients! Hello ANSWERS!)
⚡️ This is in the same vein of tending to your nervous system, but - SLOW DOWN when you’re eating. Smell your food, taste it, chew it, BREATHE. Be present!
⚡️ IgG Food Sensitivity tests are...BS. Sorry to say it! That’s why I use the Mediator Release Test. It measures what foods are creating an inflammatory response (not just IgG antibodies) which is actually what matters!
⚡️ You can TRY to DIY your way to healing your gut, but it will likely be very frustrating, confusing, and time consuming. Working with a practitioner that can run the right labs will give you answers, save you time and suffering, and give you powerful results. (Hi, it’s me!)

Have you ever worked with a practitioner before? Tell me about your experience!

Hey hey, beautiful people!

I’m Sara! Introverted, analytical, silly and weird around my comfy people. I feel most alive when I’m dancing, prefer mountains and rivers to oceans and beaches, and just like any dedicated dog mom - have 17 names for both doggos.

I’m also wildly passionate about helping people heal from chronic illness. As a Functional Nutritionist + Restorative Wellness Practitioner, I utilize functional lab testing to identify imbalances in the body, specifically the gut, to create powerful, customized healing protocols for all types of people. Chronic gut dysfunction like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, cramping - these are the obvious things people come to me for. But, other issues like skin disorders, migraines, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, joint paint, inflammation - these are the not so obvious. The thing is - SO much can stem from poor gut health. The gut is our first line of defense, it houses a massive amount of our immune system, and it absorbs the very stuff that keeps us alive - FOOD! When it suffers, the whole body suffers. You see it show up systemically. And it truly lights me up to help people restore this equisite system.

Anyway! That’s me and my work in a tiny lil nutshell. :) If you're interested in getting to the root of your chronic illness and want to work with me, click here --> https://forms.gle/KNz5ghVNZuvbgaAd6
