Odds Ratio vs. Hazard Ratio: Do you know the difference?

Odds Ratio measures whether an outcome happens, while Hazard Ratio factors in time to show how fast or at what rate it occurs.

Understanding this distinction is essential for critically evaluating clinical evidence.

Free CME. No membership required. One hour, Tuesday night.

Psoriasis and Metabolic Syndrome, Tuesday, September 1 from 6:00–7:00 p.m. CT with Patricia Shaw, DNP, FNP-BC, DCNP. We're covering where the inflammatory pathways overlap between psoriasis and metabolic syndrome, how that inflammation drives cardiovascular risk, and what changes for patients when dermatology coordinates with primary care, endocrinology, and cardiology instead of working alone.

Because your psoriasis patients are cardiology patients too, and most of them don't know it yet.

Dr. Shaw's background spans dermatology, allergy, immunology, and rheumatology, including the NHS dermatology department in Scotland. She teaches in the FNP program at New Mexico State and works to expand derm access for underserved patients in Doña Ana County. Moderated by Jennifer Wicklund, MSN, FNP-C, DCNP.

Free to members and non-members. 1 CME credit. Bring a colleague.

A 65-year-old man presents with a 2-week history of a rash that started on the back of his neck and spread downward to his back, chest, and arms.

On exam:
- Confluent red, scaly plaques covering ~90% of his body
- A distinct orange-red hue
- Well-demarcated patches of normal skin WITHIN the affected areas
- Waxy, thickened skin on the palms and soles

At a glance it looks like erythrodermic psoriasis. But those normal-skin "islands" and the waxy palms are telling a different story.

What's the diagnosis?

A) Erythrodermic psoriasis
B) Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP)
C) Mycosis fungoides
D) Atopic dermatitis

The teaching pearl for dermatology NPs: PRP is the great psoriasis mimic. The tells are the orange-red hue, "islands of sparing" (normal skin sitting inside the plaques), and waxy palmoplantar keratoderma. When a "psoriasis" case doesn't quite fit — or isn't responding to psoriasis therapy — PRP belongs on your differential. Biopsy confirms, and systemic retinoids like acitretin are first-line.

The P value is one of the most cited—and most misunderstood—numbers you'll see in dermatology research.

If you've ever read a journal article and seen P < 0.05, it's easy to assume it means "this treatment works." But that's not actually what it tells us.

A P value measures the probability of observing results this large (or larger) if there were truly no real difference between the groups being studied. Traditionally, a P value below 0.05 is considered "statistically significant," meaning the findings are less likely to be due to chance alone.

But here's the important part for Dermatology NPs:
Statistical significance is not the same as clinical significance.

Understanding what a P value can—and can't—tell us is one step toward becoming a more confident consumer of dermatology research.

Psoriasis is more than a skin condition—it can affect nearly every aspect of a patient's life.

From physical discomfort and sleep disruption to mental health, relationships, work, and self-confidence, the burden of psoriasis extends far beyond what we see during an exam.

In this video, Tiffany Trent, DNP, APRN, AGACNP-BC, shares why treating the whole patient—not just the disease—is one of the most important aspects of providing exceptional psoriasis care. As Dermatology NPs, we have the privilege of helping patients improve not only their skin, but their overall quality of life.

How do you incorporate quality-of-life discussions into your psoriasis visits? We'd love to hear your perspective in the comments.

A 69-year-old woman with a long history of plaque psoriasis presents with persistent flares despite multiple treatments.

On exam:
- Extensive plaques – elbows, knees, scalp, lower back (PASI 12, moderate/severe)
- Nail changes – pitting, ridging, onycholysis, brittle proximal nail fold
- Swelling over the dorsal hands

The skin is only part of the story. Based on these findings, what should you screen for next? 🤔
A) Contact dermatitis
B) Psoriatic arthritis
C) Onychomycosis
D) Gout

The path into dermatology looks very different than it did a generation ago. In a new Dermatology Times interview, Valerie Stern – one of California's first derm PAs – talks through the mentorship-driven model that shaped her career and why that kind of hands-on training has gotten so much harder to find.

A quick, worthwhile watch for any advanced practice provider thinking about how we train and grow the next wave of derm clinicians. 💛

Watch it (link in bio) and tell us — who mentored you into this field?

Dermatology NPs occupy a specialty all their own – and for too long, "find your people" has meant piecing it together on your own. That's the gap SDNP exists to close.

Membership isn't a badge you file away. It's a national community that speaks your clinical language, resources built specifically for derm NPs, committees where members actually shape where this field goes, and a conference that feels less like an obligation and more like a reunion. It's the group chat you didn't know you needed — the one that answers when you post "has anyone else seen this?"

You've already done the hard part. You built the career. Come sit at the table that was built for it. 💛

A 34-year-old man with 20+ years of severe, treatment-resistant psoriasis (80–90% BSA, erythroderma) has failed nearly everything – topicals, phototherapy, acitretin, five biologics, and apremilast.

He's also got a history of gout. His provider starts him on cyclosporine and lisinopril to finally get the psoriasis under control.

Here's the pharmacology pearl 👇

Why was allopurinol NOT added to prevent a gout flare when cyclosporine was started?

A) Allopurinol raises cyclosporine levels, risking nephrotoxicity
B) Lisinopril lowers allopurinol levels, making it ineffective
C) Allopurinol can cause a psoriasiform rash that masks cyclosporine's efficacy
D) Cyclosporine lowers hyperuricemia risk, making allopurinol unnecessary
