Kenyatta National Hospital staff in the Paediatric Surgical Ward held a cake cutting celebration to mark the 2nd Birthday of a set of conjoined twins who have been under their care for two years.
The conjoined twins, who are inseparable and share a heart, were abandoned upon admission to KNH two years ago. They have been under the compassionate care of our doctors, nurses, medical social workers and the chaplaincy team, who have all been nurturing them and catering to their every need.
Paediatric Surgeon, Dr. Felix Ochola, noted that the two little girls will in a couple of days be taken to Mercy Servants of the Poor Home in Kithyoko, Machakos County, to enable them access to a normal life through interactions with other children which is very important for their growth and development.
The entire team in the Ward is excited to see the children transition from full time Hospital care to home care that simulates a family set up, which will be very beneficial to their psychosocial needs.

KNH CEO, Dr Richard Lesiyampe CBS hosted Chairperson of Ethiopian Healthcare Federation, Dr Markos Fekele who doubles up as the President of East Africa Healthcare Federation to discuss strategic partnerships in healthcare sector.

The team was amazed by the services offered by the hospital.

They discussed areas of collaboration in the health sector and updated the management of the upcoming international conference in Ethiopia.

The team was accompanied by Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF) leadership led by CEO Dr. Kanyenje Gakombe.

Transforming Healthcare Delivery at KNH
Today, Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon. Aden Duale, EGH, visited Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to assess progress on major infrastructure projects and equipment investments aimed at enhancing patient care and expanding access to specialized healthcare services.

The Cabinet Secretary was received by KNH Board Chairperson Dr. Abbas Gullet, OGW, MBS, KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, CBS, and members of the KNH Board of Directors.

During the visit, he toured newly renovated inpatient facilities on the 5D, 6th and 7th floors, where structural upgrades have increased the hospital's capacity by approximately 150 beds, significantly strengthening KNH's ability to meet the growing demand for specialized medical care.

The tour also covered critical service areas, such as the advanced radiology installations acquired through NESP featuring modern CT scan, mammography, and ultrasound machines that will enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve patient outcomes.

The visit concluded at the upcoming In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Centre of Excellence, now 98% complete. Once operational, the centre will provide affordable fertility treatment and specialized reproductive healthcare services locally, reducing the need for Kenyans to seek costly treatment abroad. By expanding access to advanced reproductive medicine within the country, the centre will strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system and contribute to the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

A Journey from Pain to Hope

For 12 months, Ms. Judith Karwitha from Meru County lived with persistent abdominal pain radiating to the back and swelling that made everyday life difficult. As her condition worsened, she sought help at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), hoping to find answers.

Our specialists discovered that she had a rare, life-threatening condition: a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm, an abnormal enlargement of the body's main blood vessel through the chest and abdomen. Driven by hypertension, atherosclerosis, connective tissue disorders, and ageing, this weakening of the aortic wall carries a grave risk: without timely treatment, it can rupture and cause fatal internal bleeding.

On 20th July 2026, a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Joseph Mutie undertook a complex eight-hour surgery to repair the damaged blood vessel (open graft repair); a procedure widely regarded as the gold standard in vascular surgery.

The operation brought together the expertise of cardiothoracic surgeons, anaesthesiologists, theatre nurses, critical care specialists and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, working together to save Judith’s life.

Just ten days later, on 30th July 2026, Judith walked out of KNH smiling, pain-free and ready to return home to her loved ones.

Behind every successful operation is a team committed to giving patients a second chance at life. We thank every member of the multidisciplinary team whose skill, dedication and compassion made this outcome possible.

For Judith and her family, this was more than a successful surgery, it was the chance to look forward to tomorrow.

This is what Universal Health Coverage means: ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of where they come from, can access specialized, life-saving care when they need it most.

We wish Ms. Judith Karwitha a full and speedy recovery as she begins this new chapter.

31 brave children from KNH Pediatric Oncology Wards 1E and 3D enjoyed a fun-filled day at Sarakasi Dome, thanks to the generous support of Smiles for Change.

Accompanied by our dedicated oncology team, the children took a well-deserved break from their treatment journey to simply be kids. It was a day filled with laughter, music, dance and unforgettable memories.

At KNH, we recognize that healing goes beyond medicine. Experiences like these remind our young warriors that they are surrounded by a community that cares, supports, and celebrates them every step of the way.

A Homecoming of Excellence!
KNH Board Chairman Dr. Abbas Gullet, MBS, together with KNH CEO Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, CBS, welcomed World Medical Association President Dr. Jacqueline W. Kitulu, MBS, OGW, and renowned endocrinologist Dr. Eva Njenga during a courtesy visit to the Hospital.
"It is a great honour to return to where I trained as a doctor. It is inspiring to see the tremendous growth of Kenyatta National Hospital. Let us continue strengthening our health system to better serve our people. We should be shaping global health systems, not merely receiving them," said Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu.
Both distinguished medical professionals, who trained at KNH, toured the Level 5 and Level 6 wards currently under renovation, as well as the Chaplaincy Unit, reaffirming the Hospital's commitment to excellence in healthcare, training, and patient-centred service.

Kenyatta National Hospital CEO, Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, CBS hosted the Novartis Sub-Saharan Africa Leadership Team for strategic discussions on strengthening renal healthcare through sustainable partnerships.

The engagement focused on enhancing specialist training and quality of renal services, and increasing access to treatment for patients across the region.

They also explored key areas of collaboration, including workforce capacity development, improved quality of care, enhanced patient access to renal services, and support for innovation within the kidney transplant programme.

A guided tour of the Renal Department provided an opportunity to showcase the department's achievements while discussing existing challenges and future opportunities.

​Ward 3D hosted its first-ever Bell Ringing Ceremony to celebrate 9 brave young champions who successfully finished their cancer treatment journey.
​Led by the Haemato-Oncology team, healthcare workers, partners, and loved ones gathered as these young heroes walked the red carpet to ring the bell—symbolizing victory, courage, and a bright new beginning. The day ended in true celebratory style with music, dancing, and cake.
