Social media is designed to keep us constantly engaged, triggering what’s called a dopamine loop.

Over time, this dangerous cycle can impact sleep, focus, mental health, and interpersonal relationships. In some cases, it can develop into a behavioural addiction.

Awareness is the first step. Recovery is possible💛

Navigating the road to recovery can feel challenging, especially when faced with brand new experiences that force you to step outside your comfort zone.

"One of the therapeutic exercises we do as part of the Root programme is barefoot walking in the forest," explains our brilliant Therapist, JC.

"A couple of weeks ago, we welcomed a guest who was really adamant that they didn't want to do it because it would trigger their anxiety. As the facilitator of the therapy, I took off my shoes and demonstrated and eventually, the nervous guest did it too.

"Afterwards, the guest said they felt so grounded and connected to the earth that they planned to do it every week from that moment onwards. Often, the things we're most worried about, in this case stepping on creepy crawlies, are things we're predicting internally and allow to hold us back.

"It's a powerful opportunity to reflect on how many other things in life we're resisting and holding ourselves back from because we're convincing ourselves it's going to be a bad experience."

At Delamere, the biggest challenges form the transformational process that can help our guests to grow - and thrive - beyond addiction.

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, please remember that you're not alone. Whatever the time of day or night, our compassionate Delamere team is here to help💛

Hyperarousal and hypoarousal reflect dysregulation within the nervous system.

When the system is stuck in states of over‑activation (sympathetic) or shutdown (parasympathetic), it can impact sleep, emotional regulation, decision‑making, and increase vulnerability to maladaptive coping behaviours.

In recovery, understanding these states is key.

It allows individuals to recognise triggers, build regulation skills and develop healthier responses, reducing reliance on substances or behaviours.

During the Root phase of our treatment model, we focus on reigniting neurological pathways for our guests. This is precision care, bespoke treatment matched to your brain, your history, your pattern of behaviour.

We recently caught up with our lovely Therapist JC, who broke down what we really mean by 'reigniting neurological pathways'. Here, he explains: "Imagine you have a field. If you walk the same path every single day, the grass stops growing and it becomes a dirt path.

"Over time, this becomes a rut. Now, imagine this happening in your brain. If you participate in the same behaviours, activating the same neurons, they become stronger and this then becomes a rut too. "

Navigating the road to recovery isn't easy. But with the right support, it's possible. If you're facing addiction and struggling to navigate the first step to recovery, we're here to guide you every step💛

Every one of us is unique, our life stories are unique, our experiences are unique, so one size doesn't fit all when it comes to addiction treatment."

Through our pioneering Root programme, we're able to deliver the same experiential therapies in different ways to ensure they support each and every guest in exactly the right way, whether their addiction falls into Executive Dysfunction, Stress-Surfeit or Reward-Deficit.

Burnout builds quietly.

It can show up as disconnection, low motivation, irritability, or feeling like you’re constantly “switched on” with no time to recover.

Some people turn to substances to cope. This pattern can develop into a damaging cycle of dependency that can be hard to break.

Recognising the signs of burn out in a loved one early can make all the difference.

Support is available. Visit the Delamere website to learn how we can support you and loved ones💛

We recently sat down with our brilliant Therapist Johnathan, or as he’s better known here at Delamere, JC.

JC is incredibly proud of the lifechanging work he does for our guests, which has focused heavily on our exciting new Root programme for the last couple of months🫜

He shared: “Root can feel a bit like the rule book has been thrown out of the window.

“At Delamere, we have always taken a person-centred approach to recovery, but Root goes one step further to really understand the guest as an individual, which allows us to approach their recovery journey in a way that we know will really work for them.

“Seeing the difference Root has already made, not just to one person, but to many guests, has been incredible and I am very proud to be part of that.”

Addiction thrives in isolation.

For Dr Paul, a retired NHS consultant and former Delamere guest, a significant sporting injury which left him unable to leave the house was the catalyst that led to a dangerous relationship with alcohol.

We recently had the pleasure of catching up with Paul, as he kindly reflected on his journey with us💛

“I used to play rugby to a fairly high standard and had just started a consultant job at the age of 34, and I sustained quite a serious neck injury.

“I was off work, my wife was at work, my friends and colleagues were all at work. I was home alone, in pain and unable to do much. The drink cupboard was there, and of all the painkillers I’d been given, the only thing that seemed to help with the discomfort and muscle spasm was the booze. I knew that drinking during the day, straight from the bottle, was not healthy.”

Thankfully, Paul discovered Delamere, and in walking the path into our clinic, he took those vital first steps on his road to recovery🌱

When you’re drowning in addiction, asking for help can feel like a truly impossible step to take...but ‘help’ can be the simple word that changes your life for the better💛

For our former guest Glynn, asking his daughter for help was the ask that saved his life.

He told us: “One night I’d woken up, as alcoholics do, to go and get another drink. I staggered down the stairs to get to the fridge, and instead I sat at my kitchen table and rang my daughter.

“It was 4:07am, and I just said ‘help’. Unbeknownst to me, she had already been in touch with Delamere, and three days later I was here.”

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, whatever it may be, we are here to help. You are not alone🌱
