Happy Pride Month from the Illinois Psychological Association 🌈

Pride Month is both a celebration and a reminder of the importance of affirming, inclusive mental health care for LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities.

Psychology has an important role in promoting environments where people feel safe, supported, and empowered to live authentically. Research continues to show that affirmation, belonging, and community connection are deeply tied to psychological well-being.

This month, we honor the resilience, advocacy, and diversity of LGBTQIA+ communities while reaffirming the importance of equitable and culturally responsive mental health care.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women who gave us life, love, and strength. 💐
From all of us at IPA — none of us would be here without the sacrifices, care, and unconditional love of our mothers. Today we celebrate every mom, grandmother, and mother figure who helped shape who we are. ❤️

May is AAPI Heritage Month, which is a time to honor the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, including the scholars who have meaningfully shaped the field of psychology.

AAPI psychologists have played a critical role in expanding psychology beyond traditionally Eurocentric frameworks, advancing culturally responsive care, and deepening our understanding of how culture, identity, and context shape mental health (Leong & Okazaki, 2009; Hall, 2011).

At the same time, persistent disparities remain. AAPI individuals are significantly less likely to access mental health services, often due to stigma, structural barriers, and a lack of culturally attuned care (Abe-Kim et al., 2007). These gaps highlight the importance of continuing to integrate multicultural competence into research, training, and clinical practice.

This month we encourage psychologists to reflect on the impact of culture in their work, engage with AAPI scholarship, and advocate for equitable, inclusive mental health care.

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a serious and often overlooked side effect of long-term antipsychotic use—one that psychologists are uniquely positioned to notice first.

Because TD can be mistaken for anxiety, restlessness, or behavioral concerns, increasing awareness is critical for early identification and referral. Psychologists play a key role in observing changes, validating client experiences, and collaborating with prescribers to support whole-person care.

This Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week, we encourage clinicians to integrate routine screening, reduce stigma around medication side effects, and center client voice in treatment conversations.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚 This year, Mental Health America introduces the theme More Good Days Together, emphasizing accessible, evidence-based approaches to self-care and overall wellness.

As part of this initiative, they developed a series of affirmations designed to support positive self-perception and well-being. Research indicates that self-affirmations can enhance overall and social well-being while reducing psychological barriers, with both immediate and lasting effects. We want to encourage everyone to take some time for themselves during this month, while building skills that help regulate and maintain ourselves individually and as a community. ✨ We invite you to share in the comments which affirmation resonated with you most. 🔗 Additional resources are available at the link in our bio.

🌍 Together, small, intentional practices can contribute to meaningful improvements in mental health and well-being. 💚
