🎧Untrigger Yourself Podcast
Ep 50: The Importance of Getting Deep

In this episode, the conversation explores why lasting personal growth requires more than a single technique or good intentions. It looks at the value of self-examination, critical thinking, and learning how our past experiences shape the emotional responses that can keep us stuck.
The discussion also considers how engaging deeply with ideas - from Stoic philosophy to art, science, and other sources of wisdom - can help us develop a broader perspective on life.
Rather than skimming for quick answers, the episode makes the case for curiosity, reflection, and sustained learning as ways to become more present, resilient, and fully engaged in life.

D Magazine explores a father-daughter team turning four decades of clinical experience into a daily practice designed to help people take control of their emotional responses instead of being controlled by them.

In 1987, Dr. Peter Hercules was a small-town family doctor in Canada with a problem his medical training hadn’t prepared him for. Patients kept showing up struggling emotionally, and he had almost no practical tools to offer them. So he went looking for some. Nearly 40 years later, the board-certified physician has a waiting list as long as a year and a method he’s used with thousands of patients—built on a premise most of the mental health world doesn’t share. Hercules doesn’t think people should get better at coping with distress. He thinks they should get rid of it at the root. Now he and his daughter, Katrina, have brought that idea to Dallas as co-founders of Vivir Emotional Fitness Institute, where the pitch is simple: if you can train your body every day, why not your emotions? Their 26-week program kicks off Sept. 12 with an in-person orientation here in town. Read about what “emotional fitness” actually means, and how it’s different from therapy, at D Magazine

Emotional fitness is the ability to consistently confront reality and respond to it positively – in the most constructive, optimistic, and empowered way that one possibly could.

Emotional distress – whether fear, anger, sadness, shame, or guilt – undermines our ability to handle situations in the most effective way possible. As we develop our capacity to deal with reality consistently and positively, we can then optimally face the challenges of our personal and larger lives.

We feel at home in the world and fundamentally good being whoever we are, and ultimately experience life with more vitality, positivity, adaptability, resiliency, and serenity.

As we always say, people are not broken, they’re blocked. The great thing about emotional fitness is that it’s a growth process. None of us are fixed in our current emotional state. Just like with physical fitness, if we put in the right kind of effort we can make progress. The more work we put in, the more we get out of it. Having the right method of course is essential. But it’s available to all of us. Your emotional system has just, if not more, capacity for growth than your physical system. Whatever your emotional reality is right now does not have to be forever. Growth and change is always possible.

If wishing gets in the way of action, it hurts more than it actually helps. Change only occurs when we commit ourselves to the process and do what needs to be done. It’s not always easy but staying stuck should never be seen as an acceptable option. We can change. The right method and the right mindset a better future is available for everyone.
