July 13 marks the 140th birthday of Father Edward J. Flanagan, now Venerable Father Flanagan. What many people may not know is that when young Eddie Flanagan was born in Ballymoe, Ireland, his family wasn't sure he would survive the night.
Born with serious respiratory problems, his loved ones gathered around him, doing everything they could. His grandfather held him and rubbed his back through the night. His sister, Nellie, stayed awake praying. A priest was called to bless the newborn child.
The family feared the worst, but Eddie made it through the first night. Then the second. One can only imagine the relief they felt as hope began to replace fear.
It was a miracle that a fragile little boy from Ireland survived those first days of life. It was a blessing for generations to come.
The child who fought for every breath would grow up to become Venerable Father Flanagan, dedicating his life to helping children who needed hope, love and a chance to succeed.
Today, 140 years after his birth, we celebrate his life, his legacy and the mission that continues to change lives every day.
Happy Birthday, Venerable Father Flanagan. Your belief that "there is no such thing as a bad boy" continues to inspire the world and our mission each day. 💙
