Over the decades, Boys Town Hospital has been leading the way in hearing research, impacting the manufacturing and fitting of children's hearing aids. From our foundational work that led to the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, which is now mandated in hospitals before a newborn leaves, to the techniques we created in diagnosing and treating ear infections, our research and treatment has propelled medicine forward across the globe.

Some days, the best medicine has four paws and a wagging tail. 🐾

Poppy serves as our Child Life Facility Dog. She helps children feel more comfortable during their hospital stay, offering comfort, connection and plenty of reasons to smile along the way. Having her on our team is paw-some!

July 13 marks the 140th birthday of Father Edward J. Flanagan, now Venerable Father Flanagan. What many people may not know is that when young Eddie Flanagan was born in Ballymoe, Ireland, his family wasn't sure he would survive the night.

Born with serious respiratory problems, his loved ones gathered around him, doing everything they could. His grandfather held him and rubbed his back through the night. His sister, Nellie, stayed awake praying. A priest was called to bless the newborn child.

The family feared the worst, but Eddie made it through the first night. Then the second. One can only imagine the relief they felt as hope began to replace fear.

It was a miracle that a fragile little boy from Ireland survived those first days of life. It was a blessing for generations to come.

The child who fought for every breath would grow up to become Venerable Father Flanagan, dedicating his life to helping children who needed hope, love and a chance to succeed.

Today, 140 years after his birth, we celebrate his life, his legacy and the mission that continues to change lives every day.

Happy Birthday, Venerable Father Flanagan. Your belief that "there is no such thing as a bad boy" continues to inspire the world and our mission each day. 💙

Born in Ireland and ordained in Omaha, Father Edward J. Flanagan arrived in America with a simple but radical belief: every child deserves to be valued, protected, and given a chance. While others looked away, he spoke out against the reformatories and juvenile facilities where children were mistreated and held like prisoners. He didn't just talk. He acted.

Of all the roles Father Edward Flanagan held as the founder of Boys Town, from administrator and fundraiser to teacher and comforter, the most meaningful was being a father figure. Throughout his life, he protected and uplifted some of society’s most vulnerable children and became a father figure to more than 4,000 boys. This Father’s Day, we celebrate his legacy along with all the dads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and caring mentors who make a difference every day.
