what is positive behaviour support — and why does it matter?

positive behaviour support (PBS) is an evidence-based framework that helps people with disability live better lives by understanding and addressing the root causes of challenging behaviour.

PBS is NOT about:
✗ punishment
✗ compliance training
✗ quick fixes

PBS IS about:
✓ understanding why behaviour happens
✓ building communication and life skills
✓ creating environments that support the person
✓ reducing the need for restrictive practices
✓ long-term, meaningful change

at axia, everything we do is grounded in PBS — because we know it works.

Some practitioners support behaviour.
Rachelle supports the person behind it.

Meet Rachelle Hancock, Behaviour Practitioner at AXIA.

Rachelle brings over four years of experience in the disability sector, along with a strong background in behaviour support coordination, staff training, support plan implementation and person-centred practice.

But what makes Rachelle’s approach stand out is simple:

She leads with empathy.
She listens before acting.
She sees strengths before challenges.
She helps people feel supported, respected and understood.

Rachelle has worked directly with individuals, families, allied health teams and support workers to turn behaviour support plans into real, practical strategies that make sense in everyday life.

Her focus is not just on reducing behaviours of concern.

It is about building trust.
Creating safety.
Supporting independence.
Protecting dignity.
And helping people move toward a better quality of life.

At AXIA, we believe great behaviour support starts with compassion, collaboration and genuine connection.

Rachelle brings all of that to the work she does.

understanding the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum is one of the most important things families can learn.

a tantrum is goal-directed behaviour — it happens when someone wants something and knows they want it.

a meltdown is a neurological response to overwhelm. the person has lost control. it is not a choice.

responding to a meltdown like a tantrum makes things significantly worse.

during a meltdown:
✓ reduce stimulation (quiet voice, fewer people, softer light)
✓ don't add demands or questions
✓ stay calm and present
✓ wait for the window to close before reconnecting

understanding this difference changes everything about how we respond — and how we prevent the next one.

axia's behaviour support practitioners work with families to understand what's driving behaviour and build plans that actually help.

Some people don’t just work in behaviour support.
They change what support feels like.

Meet Jessica Krushelnisky, AXIA’s Senior Behaviour Support Practitioner.

Jess brings almost 10 years of disability sector experience across Australia and overseas, but what makes her stand out is not just her knowledge.

It is the way she listens.
The way she connects.
The way she helps people feel understood before trying to create change.

Jess supports people with complex needs, families who are exhausted, and teams who need clear, practical strategies that actually work in real life.

Her work focuses on:

Understanding the person, not just the behaviour.
Building trust before building plans.
Creating strategies that improve quality of life.
Supporting families and teams to feel confident, calm and consistent.

At AXIA, we believe behaviour support should be respectful, person-centred and focused on real positive change.

Jess represents exactly that.
