The skills in epidemiology that AI cannot replace

The rise of generative AI and shifts in the global health landscape are, understandably, being read by many epidemiology students as unprecedented challenges. Graduate training in epidemiology equips its graduates for jobs in real-world data analytics, pharmaceutical research, and evidence-based decision-making. AI accelerates work, but it is limited by the material on which it was trained. It handles routine tasks with established patterns well, e.g., coding and translation, but there are skills it cannot readily replace. These include:

* Contextualization: Is a given research topic suitable for the location where data will be collected? Is the wording of a question or sentence appropriate for the target audience?

* Extending ideas: What components of a topic or domain of interest have not yet been explored?

* Reflection: What are the biases and limitations in the presented data? How should future studies address them within the constraints of the setting?

Answering these questions requires an understanding of research methodology, but also of the environments and human experiences that shape it, most of which are absent from the data that trains AI models. The most effective way to develop that judgement is real-world experience in data collection, analysis, and presentation. A time-efficient way to do so is an MS or PhD thesis in epidemiology that produces tangible outputs: a thesis, publications, and annotated R code. A full-time program ensures this happens with proper supervision.

At Prince of Songkla University, our MS and PhD programs in Epidemiology are taught in English and include training in R, epidemiologic methods, real data analysis, scientific writing, and thesis-based research. Details in the links below.
