Carmen Luisa Yoga

Carmen Luisa Yoga Carmen Luisa first discovered yoga in 2002 as a college student at UCSD where she earned a degree in Psychology. Yoga became a way of life.

What began as "just another workout" slowly unfolded into a journey of personal growth that challenged some of her deepest held beliefs. Carmen began developing a deep knowledge of body and breath a young age. A lifelong athlete, she has been a competitive swimmer, ballroom dancer, and martial artist. Athletics became a way for her to withdraw from the senses and enter a space of moving meditation

. In today's results-based, high stimulus world, Carmen invites us to withdraw from our senses, tune in to our bodies, and listen to its messages without judgement. Her wish is for her students to experience that transcendent space that exists when we simply let go and combine body, breath, and movement. Carmen is RYT200 certified through the Joy of Yoga school and is currently enrolled in the 500hr program with Jennifer Prugh. When she's not teaching yoga, Carmen works in HR and Product Development for an artisanal food company based in Morgan Hill, California.

Hello FB fam! It’s been a minute… over the last year we’ve slowly been getting settled into our new home and community in SLO. We’ve had some of our most joyful moments here (all of which involve Eva who is now a sassy force of nature) and experienced a significant loss with the passing of our 14 year old cat Meaux. We miss him immensely 🥺

It’s been an adjustment, saying goodbye to the Bay that we grew to love over the last decade. And as our roots grow deeper in our new community, we’re making new routines and meaningful connections.

After a 2.5 year hiatus, I’m dipping my toes back into the yoga waters and will be teaching again starting January 2023. I’m excited to share my practice with you all again… it looks a little (or a lot) different these days. A little slower, a little softer, just as engaging. Details coming soon 🥰

Ahimsa, non-harming
🙅🏼‍♀️
Ahimsa for me lately has been about knowing when to quit. Growing up an athlete in the era of “no pain, no gain”, it became second nature for me to ignore the signals of overload from my body until it’s too late. Years of this led to a hyper-sensitization of my nervous system and a chronic pain condition.
💆🏼‍♀️
One strategy to reprogram the nervous system is pacing. I’ve had to train myself to recognize and respond differently to the signals from my body, and quit while I’m ahead to avoid further harm, a strange feeling. Meaux here serves as a great reminder to just take it eaaaaasyy.

I’ve been missing y’all these last few weeks... in lieu of our regular Saturday morning practice, here’s a link to my first EVER video class. I hope to make a couple more before the little one makes her debut, if she allows. Enjoy!

In this video I lead you through a 45-minute slow vinyasa flow with modifications for my 9 months pregnant belly. All levels

Ishvara Pranidhana, Surrender to a higher power.
🙏🏼
I’ve been having a hard time with this one... hence, I’m playing catch up now. I like being in control, and through this quarantine I’ve turned that into controlling my surroundings... cleaning, organizing, a routine, etc. I’ve yet to fully surrender to rumblings of anticipation, worry, and finally, trust... that we’ll get through this pandemic, this birth, this wild introduction to parenthood. And yet, I know we will.

Svadhyaya, self-study
📚
All my birth prep classes were cancelled due COVID-19, so self-study has been the best option. Ina May’s books is a great combination of evidence-based practices, midwifery wisdom passed down over generations, and intuitive guidance. This baby is coming out one way or another... preparation can only go so far, and for the rest I’ll rely on what body knows to do.

Tapas, Discipline
🕊
When we decided to combine our lives, we lived in my 400 square foot studio apartment for about 4 months while searching for our home. At the same time I was going through the first 100 hours of yoga teacher training. It was an intense time, and looking back now we laugh at having survived the “tiny house test”.
🕊
We learned (and are still learning) how to live well together, how to allow room for each other, how to forgive for the 1000th time when the hall light is left on or a piece of garbage makes it to the counter NEXT to the trash can but not actually IN the trash. It’s truly an every day, every moment kind of practice.

Santosha, contentment
😌
Today I started to feel the first twinges of quarantine funk... We went for a walk around the neighborhood and admired the flowers, felt the sunshine on our skin, and fantasized about upgrading to one of the fancy homes up the hill. Then we strolled back to ours, where these two derps we’re waiting to get back on the new cuddle and video call routine. And there is was, 💙
