The Problem With Being “Nice”

I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between being nice and being kind to ourselves.

For much of my life, being “nice” looked like putting other people first. Making things work. Being flexible. Taking care of everyone else before I took care of myself.

And while there’s nothing wrong with being caring, I eventually realized that I was often extending more compassion to others than I was to myself.

That showed up in fitness, too.

I would follow the plan, push through fatigue, ignore what I was feeling, and convince myself that being healthy meant being more disciplined.

But the older I get, the more I believe that true health isn’t about controlling your body.

It’s about having a relationship with it.

Some days strength looks like a challenging workout.
Some days it looks like a walk by the ocean.
Some days it looks like rest.

The hard part is learning to trust yourself enough to know the difference.

That’s what I’m practicing these days—not being nicer, but being kinder.

Listening more.
Forcing less.
Trusting that my body is not something to battle with, but something to partner with.

Because real strength isn’t found in pushing through at all costs.

It’s found in responding to what you need with honesty, compassion, and trust.

And I’ve found that when we do that, health becomes a lot more sustainable—and a lot more enjoyable. 💛

What would change if you treated your body with the same warmth you offer everyone else?

The goal isn’t to control your body. It’s to trust it.

This is something I’m still learning myself.

For a long time, I thought being healthy meant trying harder. Following the plan perfectly. Pushing through. Getting it right.

But over the years, as a physical therapist, yoga teacher, and a woman navigating my own life changes, I’ve learned that health feels very different than I expected.

It feels less like control and more like trust.

Trusting yourself enough to rest when you need rest.

Trusting yourself enough to move when movement is what your body is asking for.

Trusting that one missed workout, one indulgent meal, or one difficult week doesn’t undo everything you’ve built.

The women I admire most aren’t the ones who have mastered perfect habits.

They’re the ones who have learned how to listen to themselves.

They know how to adjust.
They know how to begin again.
They know how to care for themselves without punishment.

To me, that’s real confidence.

Not controlling your body.

Trusting that it has wisdom worth listening to.

✨ Here are simple ways to start building that trust today ✨

I’d love to know: What helps you trust yourself more?

Lately, I’ve realized that what I was really searching for wasn’t confidence.
It was self-trust.

For years, I thought confidence would come when I felt more certain. When I had the perfect plan. When I looked a certain way. When I accomplished enough.

But life has a funny way of teaching us otherwise.

The seasons that have grown me the most weren’t the ones where I felt confident. They were the ones where I learned to trust myself.

To trust my body when it asked for rest.

To trust my intuition when something felt off.

To trust that I could navigate hard things without having all the answers.

To trust that making a mistake didn’t mean I had failed.

As a physical therapist and yoga teacher, I see this all the time. Women often tell me they want more confidence. But underneath that, what we’re really longing for is trust.

Trust in our bodies.
Trust in our decisions.
Trust in ourselves.

I’ve come to believe that confidence isn’t something we find. It’s something that naturally grows when we learn to trust ourselves.

And self-trust is built in the smallest moments.

Keeping a promise to yourself.
Taking care of your body.
Speaking honestly.
Setting a boundary.
Beginning again after a setback.

Little by little, those moments become evidence.
Evidence that you can rely on yourself.
And that changes everything.

I wrote more about this in this week’s newsletter, Letters on Living Well on Substack.

If you’ve ever struggled with confidence, I think you’ll find that the answer may be gentler than you expect. 🤍

Movement has shown me that true strength isn’t just built in the body—it’s discovered through patience, resilience, and the way we keep showing up for ourselves.

It’s taught me patience when progress feels slow.

Trust when things don’t go as planned.

And confidence that comes from keeping promises to myself.

Over the years, I’ve learned that wellness isn’t about perfection.

It’s about showing up.
Taking the next step.
Moving your body with intention.
And creating habits that support the life you want to live.

My hope is that this space inspires you to feel stronger, move better, and trust yourself a little more every day.

I’m glad you’re here. 🤍

Over the past few years, I’ve undergone some major personal growth. I’ve learned so much in my own health journey and I’d love to share that with you!

Let’s…
Move without pain, build lasting strength, and feel truly at home in our body.

That’s the transformation I want for every woman who finds her way here.

Because WE aren’t chasing a perfect body—WE are looking for a body WE can trust. One that feels strong, moves with ease, and supports the life they want to live.

Here, I’ll be sharing practical movement tips, insights from physical therapy, strategies for staying active as we age, and honest conversations about what it really takes to feel strong and capable in your body.
Because moving well isn’t just about how your body performs—it’s about how your life feels.

My hope is that this space inspires you to build a deeper connection with your body, discover what’s possible, and define wellness on your own terms.

I’m grateful you’re here, and I can’t wait to explore that journey together.

Motherhood

has been the place I’ve learned some of the most valuable lessons of my life.

When they were born, I truly had no clue what I was doing! And, if I’m honest, my maturity to understand and appreciate them as precious human beings, was just not there.

I relied on others to tell me what would be best for them. And, the amount of stress I experienced from that was quite significant.

Yet, as they began to grow, I learned, I was growing with them. Their forgiveness, their compassion, their willingness to accept my failures, taught me that…

If I’m willing to accept my lack of perfection, and know with confidence that when I approach them with thoughtfulness, mindfulness, and compassion, we will cultivate a lasting bond.

These two young men are exceptional. And, the effort I put in has shown its face and I know that my constant desire to love and support them will create a family bond of unconditional love. I couldn’t be more grateful for that ♥️
