Overdose prevention sites save lives. They provide health care and connection to other services for citizens living in deep poverty and poor health.

The Harbour serves over 350 unique clients DAILY. Knowing this, it is offensive beyond belief that the DVBA and Coun. Gardiner -- whose own platform in the last election was to serve the “well-being and interests of those who live here” -- would seek to close it.

Policing poverty doesn’t solve poverty.

Policing health matters doesn’t improve health outcomes.

Shame on our government for trying to sell this to us as a solution.

Research consistently shows that displacement disrupts access to healthcare, harm reduction services, outreach workers, medications, food, shelter, and social supports. People lose tents, identification, survival gear, and their cherished belongings. They are pushed into more isolated locations where overdoses are less likely to be witnessed and emergencies are less likely to receive a timely response. They destabilize medical conditions and increase rates of hospitalization.

These harms are not accidental. They are predictable and well understood. Yet, encampment sweeps and forced displacement continue despite evidence that they worsen health outcomes.

Homelessness is a policy failure. Displacement kills.

"Josie Osborne announced the move in a statement Wednesday, reversing the position she held on the matter just weeks ago, when she said the plan to open an OPS would proceed despite vehement opposition from Mayor Ken Sim."

The government's #1 responsibility is to not get in the way of the people having what they need to stay alive.

Caving to the desires of the wealthy is not what we need from our Minister of Health. We need strong, decisive, evidence-informed action in the face of BC's biggest public health crisis in history.
