Surgery of the Day: Pediatric Ankle Reconstruction
Today’s case highlights the resilience of pediatric patients and the precision of reconstructive surgery. A 7-year-old boy presented with a complex soft tissue injury to his right ankle after a traumatic motorcycle wheel spoke accident.
Following a meticulous debridement (thorough cleaning) to ensure a healthy wound bed, our team performed a Sural Flap surgery. This procedure involves rotating a "pedicled" section of skin and fascia from the back of the calf to cover the exposed bone and tendons of the ankle. This vital coverage provides a stable, vascularized environment to promote healing and restore the integrity of the joint.
Case Summary
Patient: 7-year-old male
Mechanism: Motorcycle spoke injury
Procedure: Wound debridement + Distally based Sural Flap
