Most people think histamine is just about allergies but histamine is also a neurotransmitter 🧠

It helps regulate:
- wakefulness
- alertness
- stomach acid
- appetite
- nervous system activity

Histamine issues can sometimes look like:
⚡ anxiety that feels “buzzy”
🌙 racing thoughts at night
😵‍💫 feeling wired but exhausted
🔊 overstimulation in crowds
🤕 headaches
🍷 poor tolerance to alcohol or fermented foods

One of the biggest missing pieces in this conversation?
Histamine and the gut are deeply connected.

When digestion is struggling - whether from chronic stress, bacterial overgrowths, gut inflammation, or under-eating - histamine symptoms can become louder too.

This is why the answer often isn’t just removing more foods 🚫

Some useful starting points:
🥩 eating enough protein consistently
🍷 reducing alcohol temporarily
🚶 improving bowel regularity
🍠 stabilising blood sugar
🍓 increasing vitamin C-rich foods
😴 improving sleep timing
🧘 reducing nervous system overload
🌿 addressing gut inflammation instead of only restricting foods

Because histamine isn’t “bad,” it’s an important signalling molecule.

Usually, the question isn’t:
“How do I eliminate histamine?”

It’s:
“Why has my body become so reactive to it?”

Is your parasite cleanse making your gut worse? Here’s why you can end up with even MORE gut issues than before.

Ever noticed that when you’re overwhelmed, your brain doesn’t speed up -
it just... stops? 🧠

ADHD shutdown is often a protective response when your brain has been carrying too much for too long. Chronic stress, sensory overload, emotional demands, decision fatigue, poor sleep, or simply trying to keep up with everyday life can all contribute.

When that happens, your brain starts conserving energy.
That’s why tiny tasks suddenly feel impossible.
Why you reach for your phone without thinking.
Why sugar suddenly sounds like the answer.
Why you can feel anxious and completely numb at the same time.

The instinct is often to push harder.
But what your brain usually needs isn’t more pressure; it needs more support.

That might look like:
🥚 Eating something with protein.
😴 Prioritising sleep.
🚶 Going for a short walk outside.
📱 Putting your phone down for 10 minutes.
🤝 Asking for help.
📋 Reducing your to-do list instead of adding to it.

Small actions can help reduce the load on an overwhelmed nervous system.

So next time you notice yourself shutting down...
Instead of asking, “Why can’t I just get on with it?”

Try asking: What does my brain REALLY need right now?”

👇 What’s one thing that helps you come out of ADHD shutdown?

➡️ LIFE UPDATE: I’m back at uni this year. And OMG… it’s a LOT. 😅

I’m enrolled in a Grad Dip of Mental Health and Neuroscience (which takes 2 years), with a plan to roll it into a Masters in the 3rd year.

I’ve been learning the MOST amazing content that I’ve been able to apply in clinic and in my practitioner mentoring! 🤓

And also: Holy s**t, it’s been hard.

It’s over 20 hours per week - and that’s part time. (Bye bye social life!)

It’s been over 20 years since I was last at uni.
Things have changed a lot since then. I had to learn how to be a student all over again.

And attempting this with ADHD + perimenopause both having a party in my brain at the same time? MASSIVE.

Yes, I’m doing all the things:
🌿 Saffron
🌿 L-theanine and GABA
🌿 Supportive nutrients
🌿 Fixing up my gut to keep that gut-brain connection happy
🏃‍♀️ Regular exercise
💊 ADHD meds as needed (plus herbs/supps to minimise the side effects)
👩‍💻 Working with a mental health coach

There have still been meltdowns as I try to juggle it all. (And by meltdowns I mean a fair bit of ugly crying.)

I know it will be worth it, as this is the niche I want to double down on. I want to have this knowledge so that I can offer you the most educated, evidence-informed, well-rounded approach possible, while still remaining true to my naturopathic roots. 🌿🌼🍃

So I’m writing this post to partly remain accountable. I’m not giving up! (Even when this semester’s topic is MRI and brain imaging research and it’s super important but dryyyy as fuuuuck lol - zoom in if you want to see my notes lol.)

Send all your good nerdy vibes please. ❤️

Do you feel like perimenopause has lit your brain on fire? 🔥 You’re not alone. Even once we improve hormone levels with HRT/MHT, mental health can still be an issue. Here’s what to do next.

Quick survey for ADHD folk: How many umbrellas have you lost over your adult lifetime, due to leaving them behind somewhere?

Saw this lonely character in the change room at my gym yesterday, and it got me thinking - was this a case of ADHD tax? 🤔

Just a couple of days earlier my husband mentioned that he hadn’t seen one of our umbrellas for a while (of course it was the nicest one too), not since “that dinner out on that rainy night in St Kilda.” Oops. Another one bites the dust. ☂️🪦

I’ve tried spending more on a fancy colourful brolly in the hope that I’ll be more likely to look after it. Nope. Left that one on a boat after a party.

Tried those magical tiny fold up ones in the hope I would always stash it in my handbag and therefore remember it. Nope. Kept losing it around the house because it was so small.

I reckon we’ve lost 3 or 4 in the last 5 years.

Anyhooo… what’s your lost umbrella count?

Adolescence is one of the most important windows for brain development.

During this time, the brain is in a state of increased neuroplasticity - actively rewiring, strengthening pathways, and shaping long-term patterns for learning, behaviour, and emotional regulation.

At the same time, there’s a natural shift in the circadian rhythm.
Melatonin is released later, which means teenagers are biologically wired to:
→ fall asleep later
→ wake later

So when early school start times are layered on top of this…
Many adolescents end up chronically sleep-deprived.

And that has real effects on:
• learning + memory consolidation
• emotional regulation
• stress resilience
• overall brain development

From a physiological perspective, sleep during this stage isn’t just “rest” -
It’s a critical part of how the brain matures.

The takeaway?
Supporting adequate sleep (including letting them sleep in where possible) is one of the most impactful ways to support their developing brain.

Huge huge huge weekend at the Australasian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine and Australasian ADHD Professionals Association conferences in Melbourne. So huge that I couldn’t even post yesterday! 🫠

LOVED learning about the cognitive benefits of exercise from Dr. Paul Taylor.

LOVED watching my college friend and absolute legend Rhiannon Hardingham killing it on stage (as usual).

LOVED meeting new friends, new colleagues, and connecting with the folks that I see on IG/FB/WhatsApp all the time… online is great, but it’s always so wonderful to hug, learn, and cheers a cheeky glass or two with you in real life. 🥂

LOVED that I found psychiatrists and psychologists who think outside the “meds and CBT only” box when it comes to supporting ADHD and mental health patients. 🙌

LOVED that our industry is becoming more collaborative, more curious, and more patient-centred than ever before. ❤️❤️❤️

More weekends like this please. (After I’ve recovered from this one lol!)

This photo is nearly 3 years in the making. 🏄🏻‍♀️

It started with a torn elbow tendon, 12 months of conservative treatment (injections, physio), and then a fairly painful elbow reconstruction surgery last October.

Then - while rehabbing that - there was a LOT of pain, more scans were done, and we discovered a torn labrum in the shoulder (yup - same arm).

6 months of physio (and more injections) later, and it was getting worse! Then… 2 weeks ago… a diagnosis of frozen shoulder.

1 x shoulder hydrodilatation later (can highly recommend the green whistle - do NOT try rawdogging this procedure if you don’t have to lol)… and it was like a miracle happened. My arm suddenly started getting better.

Here’s the fun part: I had exactly 2 weeks before I was due to jump on a plane for a little holiday in Noosa.

So what did I do? I rehabbed like I’ve never rehabbed before. Every exercise. Every stretch. (Also smashed a bunch of herbs and supplements for good measure.)

And on Thursday afternoon?

First wave back in 3 years. I nearly cried (actually maybe I did - hard to tell if they were tears or salt water from the surf). And then I caught another one. And a couple of dolphins and a turtle came to say “welcome back, we’ve been waiting for you.” 🐬

During the past couple of years (and what was sometimes described as a “diagnostic odyssey” lol) I told myself many things that weren’t true.

That maybe I’m too old (I’m 50).

That maybe surfing was a chapter that’s just closed for me now.

That maybe my arm was just going to hurt forever and this is just my life now.

That maybe I need to take up a safer hobby, like… I dunno… crochet (ok - crochet is actually quite cool, but you know what I mean).

But I kept pushing, kept asking questions, kept advocating for myself and (mostly) kept the faith.

If you’re going through a diagnostic or rehab odyssey right now, I feel you. And I’m sending you alllll the love. Keep going. Be gentle with yourself through the down days. Then give yourself a pep talk and keep gently pushing ahead. Do not give up! And FFS do your BORING physio exercises hahaha). Because what’s on the other side is sooooo worth it. 💗💪
