Working late is part of life when you run a small business. There are long days, unexpected challenges, and plenty of moments where you're still ticking off the to-do list long after most people have headed home.

But every now and then, the day ends with a quiet reminder to slow down. Friday evening, walking back to the car park past the Cathedral, the golden light caught the stone in a way that made everything pause for a moment.

Sometimes the reward isn't finishing early—it's finding a little joy in the journey home. 🌅✨

Today is the first Sunday of the school holidays.

My family's in France. I'm in our Bury St Edmunds practice, laying the floor in the new consulting room.

Not because I particularly wanted to spend my Sunday this way, but because when you're building a business that you believe in, sometimes you become the floor fitter as well as the Optometrist.

Last week, a patient looked into the unfinished room and said, "I hope I'm not paying for that."

I'll be honest—that one hit me hard.

The reality is that every penny goes straight back into building a practice that serves our community today and, hopefully, will still be serving patients in another 90 years. Sometimes that means evenings, weekends, and learning skills I never expected to need.

As for laying flooring around a curved wall... let's just say, if I wasn't the boss I would have been fired my language! 😅

The equipment arrives on Friday, and then this empty room will really start to become the consulting space we've been planning.

Watch this space. The transformation is underway.
