The numbers are stark: According to the latest study by Association for Savings & Investment South Africa (ASISA) in collaboration with True South Actuaries, South Africa’s death & disability insurance gap has grown to about R50.4 trillion - roughly 7 × the country’s GDP. That means each of the 16.1 million earners is under-insured by approx R3.1 million: R1.3 m for death cover, R1.8 m for disability cover. The study also shows that while income rises, the uptake of insurance doesn’t keep pace. Cover is unequal and shrinking in critical illness protection.
