I needed air.
And a fresh breeze blew by.
Gentle, subtle, arousing my senses.
Tingling my skin, teasing my hair.
I run my fingers along my soft curves - and sense its cool refreshment.

It invigorates and excites me,
This breeze.
Twirling around me now.
Finding each slope, each crease, each open expanse.
Filling me with its desire, its passion - Its need to be free.

It whips around me now
Intense, lashing, burning
And then, it is gone.
I take a deep breath, but too late.
It is calm.
I am warm.
And alive.

Vulnerable. Goofy. Fun. Comfortably uncomfortable. Approachable. Brilliant.

This year I am exemplifying those things ☝🏽

How? Playing in the rain. Sleeping in sexy lingerie. Car camping. Spontaneous road trips. Mastering neurosurgical skills. Laughing. Flying. Smiling at intimidation. Speaking from the heart. Meditating. Diving into the ocean.

I have dreams this year. And what are dreams but visions of reality that our subconscious mind pieces together when it is freed from the limitations of rational thought. Rational 👉🏽reasonable 👉🏽 not extreme nor excessive 👉🏽 average 🖖🏽

“Chasing a dream can feel disheartening. But if it’s still in your dreams, if it’s still in your heart, then that dream was sown into your heart for a reason. That dream was given to you to protect. That dream was given to you to CREATE.”

My first Thanksgiving without you brother.

I suppose there must be a first for everything.
Sitting by your hospital bed last Thanksgiving,
I knew.
I knew this year would be the first.

I thought my heart would be so sad.
I thought my eyes would be red rimmed,
Tears brimming and threatening to fall,
Blurring my gaze
Drifting across the table to your seat.

But instead
I felt nothing.
Not so much emptiness, not a void.
Just nothing.

I suppose this is a form of being numb
When you think you’ve dealt with something,
But instead your mind has tucked it far away.
Away from where it can hurt you.

Maybe I’ll feel the loss again.
When someone asks whether I have siblings
In that pause
Before I respond blankly about being an only child.

Because you’re gone.

Ahh, there are the tears... just enough to burn a little.

Brother I love you.
I know how much you loved Thanksgiving
How, no matter what, you would show up
And smile as warm a smile as you could muster
Despite your own darkness
Your own demons
You were there.

My heart is so full!! Hand-written letters are my kryptonite. This one arrived in the mail today, entirely unexpected, complete with printed photographs. Photographs with descriptions on the back, including “this is what the trail looks like”, “a sign”, and “a hiker person”. 😆🥰

I met Lyn in Utah, in the middle of a gorge. Our paths kept crossing along the hike, so we matched up our steps and exchanged niceties. Then after a few photos we parted ways.

And in the middle of full moon craziness at work (yes it is a legit thing), when everyone is needing me NOW and the responsibilities are stacking up, this letter arrives and I am back in that gorge with a smile on my lips.

Thank you Lyn; you made my day. 🙏🏼

Yay running! Check out those sweet dirt smudges on my legs. Too easy to make this analogy so I’m going to do it anyway - in life we fall, we eat some friggin dirt, and then we either lay there and complain about how the dirt we just ate MADE US fall... or we acknowledge that hey WE MISSTEPPED, our own clumsy feet brought us down and the dirt was there to catch us and break that fall. Then you can laugh because now you’re grateful for dirt in your mouth. Perspective .

So then you and your dirty mouth get back up, and DO what you set forth to do. 🙌

Have you been in the ocean?

I mean really been IN the ocean.

Have you walked along the shore, felt the grains of sand between your toes, gritty and raw. Have you stepped into the water and felt the pull. The pull of the tide. Gently pushing you in toward shore, then pulling you enticingly away.

Have you taken the plunge? Have you felt the chill of the water against your bare skin, taken a deep breath, and submerged yourself. Have you remained suspended under water? Feeling the waves roll over you. Surrounded by the calm, under the unrest, the pounding of the waves.

God that feels good. To be suspended calmly in the midst of turbulence. To feel it swirl around you, yet remain serene.

But you have to breathe. So you come up for air. And the wind whips at your hair, the ocean spray stinging your face. The waves lifting you and then crashing all around you.

Have you ever been IN the ocean?

to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
