This is a big deal. And honestly β it's a long time coming. π
PCOS just got a new name. It's now officially called PMOS β Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. Published in The Lancet in May 2026, agreed upon by 50+ global patient and professional organizations.
Here's why the name change matters so much:
The old name β Polycystic O***y Syndrome β was coined in the 1930s when doctors spotted follicles on ovaries and assumed they were cysts. They weren't. And the ovaries were never actually the root of the problem.
That name stuck for nearly a century. And because it pointed at the ovaries, treatment focused almost exclusively on fertility and reproduction β birth control to regulate cycles, fertility drugs when someone wanted to conceive, and not much else.
Meanwhile, millions of women were dealing with insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular risk, chronic inflammation, anxiety, depression, gut issues, thyroid dysfunction, and adrenal dysregulation β and most never received proper screening or treatment for ANY of it.
The new name β Polyendocrine METABOLIC Ovarian Syndrome β finally says what this condition actually is. A complex, multisystem hormonal disorder that goes far beyond the ovaries.
In functional medicine, this is not news. We have been investigating and treating the metabolic and endocrine drivers of this condition for decades. Insulin resistance. Gut health. Inflammation. Nutrient deficiencies. Adrenal function. Root causes β not just symptoms.
The establishment is finally catching up. And we are here for it.
If you have PMOS and you've only ever been offered birth control or fertility treatment β there is so much more we can investigate and address.
