Celebrating Australian agriculture...

I always enjoy learning about young entrepreneurs making their mark in agriculture.

Chloe Dann, a shearer from South Gippsland is building a business, sharing her knowledge and helping support hobby farmers across the region.

Raised on a hobby farm in South Gippsland’s dairy and beef country, Chloe did not grow up around sheep and was 27 before she really began working with them.

Her journey into shearing began with a job at Phillip Island Nature Parks, where she discovered an unexpected passion for working with sheep and made the bold decision to change careers from hospitality to agriculture.

After identifying a gap in small mob shearing, Chloe built a business working across hobby farms throughout Gippsland. Along the way, she noticed a common problem, with many new sheep owners facing preventable issues such as cast sheep, parasite management and basic animal care, not through neglect, but simply through a lack of knowledge.

That led Chloe to create Sheep Basics, a series of free community events designed to provide practical, easy-to-understand information for people new to sheep farming.

The sessions cover topics including hoof care, breed selection, fencing, drenching, lambing and common ailments, and the response has been outstanding. So far, 231 hobby farmers have attended four events, with new locations continuing to be added across Victoria.

Through a partnership with AgMind Australia, Chloe has also been able to include a farmer mental health component in the program.

Chloe’s story is an inspiring one and highlights the talent, initiative and community spirit of the next generation in Australian agriculture.

🐑 Thanks Inverleigh! 🐑

Last weekend, around 45 local farmers and small landholders joined us at the beautiful Inverleigh Hall for a day of practical sheep knowledge and conversations that matter.

A huge thank you to Chloe the Shearer for sharing her expertise, answering questions, and helping build confidence in sheep handling and husbandry.

Alongside the sheep basics, I had the opportunity to talk about looking after ourselves and the people around us. Through AgMind's Supporting Your Mates session, we explored how to recognise when someone might be struggling, how to start a conversation, and where to find support when it's needed.

Farming communities have always looked after each other. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is check in, listen, and let someone know they're not carrying it all alone.

Thank you to everyone who came along, shared their stories, asked questions, and helped make the day such a positive event.
