This is my personal story about navigating my experiences with ADHD and the things I've learned along the way. One of the bigger lessons I have learned is that the source of my anxiety is actually coming from my ADHD and sensory overload. This has led to burnout way more times than necessary! Now I practice self-care and take micro breaks when needed.

The Lie We Tell Ourselves About "High-Functioning" Anxiety.

I spent years wearing my anxiety like a suit of armor. I convinced myself that the constant low-grade buzzing in my chest wasn’t a problem—it was my fuel. It was how I got things done. It was how I survived in a world that felt too loud and too fast.

But here is the raw truth from the chair across from you, and from the guy living it:

That "fuel" is burning your engine out.
In my counseling practice, I see this pattern constantly, especially in men and late-diagnosed adults. We aren’t just "worried." We are hyper-vigilant. We aren’t just "stressed." We are stuck in a functional freeze—autopilot on the outside, chaos on the inside.
We think if we stop worrying, the wheels will fall off. We think the anxiety is the only thing holding the pieces of our lives together.

That is the lie.

Anxiety isn't keeping you safe; it's keeping you exhausted. It’s a nervous system that has forgotten how to idle.
So, I’m not going to tell you to "just think positive" or "meditate for an hour." When your brain is on fire, silence feels dangerous.
Here is a different approach (The "Sacred Balance" Shift):
Stop trying to think your way out of a feeling. You cannot cognitive-behavior your way out of a physiological hijack.
Instead of fighting the anxiety, acknowledge the energy.

When the static starts rising:
Don't sit still. Anxiety is trapped mobilization energy. If you sit there, it turns into panic.
Move heavily. Push against a wall. Squeeze a muscle tight and release. heavy lifting. Engage the body to tell the brain: “I am handling the threat.”
Exhale longer than you inhale. It sounds simple, but it forces your parasympathetic nervous system to apply the brakes.

You don't need to be "fixed." You just need to learn how to throttle down the engine without crashing the car.
Let’s find that balance.

👇 Tell me below: Does your anxiety feel like "worry" in your head, or like "static" in your body?

That panic you feel in the store? It’s not just "anxiety." 🛑
Body:
If you feel like you’re going to snap while holiday shopping, you aren’t alone. As a counselor with ADHD, I see this constantly—especially in those of us diagnosed later in life.
We label it anxiety, but often it’s actually Sensory Overload. The lights, the noise, the crowds, the endless decisions... it burns out our battery faster than it does for neurotypical brains.
My advice? Stop trying to "power through."
👉 Take micro-breaks.
👉 Step outside.
👉 Protect your peace.
You don't need to apologize for needing to recharge.
