☀️ SUNSHINE DISPATCHER RECOGNITION ☀️

Some people become the heart of a 9-1-1 center.
For Steuben County Emergency Services… that person is Janel Lewis.

Janel has been with the Steuben County 911 Center in Bath, New York since 2005. Starting as a dispatcher, later becoming a supervisor, and now serving as Operations Manager, she has dedicated over two decades to serving both her team and her community.

But her impact goes far beyond a title.

She picks up overtime so others are not constantly mandated.
She celebrates birthdays and anniversaries so people feel appreciated.
She helps make Telecommunicators Week special every year.
She trains new dispatchers, supports her team after difficult calls, and reminds people why their work matters.

Earlier this year, after the unexpected passing of the center’s Deputy Director, Janel stepped up once again — taking on responsibilities she never expected, while continuing to support everyone around her.

Her nominator shared:

“Janel is the most amazing person, coworker and friend. She truly is Steuben County 911.”

Janel represents exactly what the Sunshine Dispatcher Recognition Program was created for — recognizing the voices behind the headset who quietly hold everything together.

💛 Thank you, Janel, for your leadership, compassion, and dedication to public safety communications.

Special thank you to GovWorx, proud sponsor of the Sunshine Dispatcher Recognition Program, for helping us recognize dispatchers across the country.

Before the lights. Before the sirens. There’s a voice.™

As EMS Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank all of our members for the dedication, compassion, and hard work you give every single day. Whether on the ambulance, in dispatch, at the hospital, with fire departments, flight crews, or our local first responders. It truly takes all of us working together to provide the best care for our communities.

This week may highlight EMS, but the commitment and sacrifices made by emergency responders happen 24/7, 365 days a year. We are proud to stand beside such an incredible group of professionals and volunteers who continue to answer the call no matter the circumstances.

As we wrap up EMS Week 2026, let this also be a reminder to take care of yourselves and each other. Check in on your peers, support one another, and never underestimate the importance of mental and physical wellness in this profession. We are strongest when we work together and look out for one another both on and off the job.

From all of us at Bath Ambulance, thank you to our crews, neighboring agencies, dispatchers, hospital staff, firefighters, law enforcement, and flight teams for everything you do for our community. We appreciate you today and every day. 🚑💙🫶🏼

As we previously shared, this year’s EMS Week theme is all about coming together and working as one team. It truly takes a village to keep everything running and ensure our community receives the care it needs.

While many calls are handled by crews responding independently, there are times when additional resources and support are critical. That’s where our incredible dispatchers at Steuben County 911 come in. They are the calm voice behind the scenes, coordinating responses, providing support, and helping make sure everyone gets where they need to be safely and efficiently.

We are also incredibly thankful for our local first responders, firefighters, flight teams, law enforcement and hospital staff. No matter the situation, we know we can count on one another to work together to provide the best possible care for our patients and community. From the first 911 call to the care provided at the hospital, every role is important and every person makes a difference. We truly value the teamwork and partnerships we share every single day.

Our county dispatchers consistently go above and beyond for our crews and our community. Their dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful for everything they do each and every day.

We always say it takes a village and we are proud to be part of yours.

Improving Outcomes, Together (the photo posted is the perfect example!)

Every EMS clinician carries one call with them forever, not for its heroism but for its humanity. A child whose breathing finally stabilized, a grandmother whose hand was held until her family reached her side, or a stranger who, despite fear and pain in their eyes, chose to trust them.

These moments seldom make headlines, yet they influence outcomes and change lives. These outcomes go beyond just vital signs. They include people returning home, families remaining united and communities feeling safer because someone was there when it mattered most.

Today’s EMS clinicians bring advanced skills and innovative tools to these moments: evolving models of care that serve patients in big cities, tribal lands, rural plains and everywhere in between: prehospital ultrasound, early stroke recognition, and whole blood transfusion. These advancements are creating a measurable difference well before the patient reaches the hospital.

Improving Outcomes, Together extends beyond medicine. It’s a collective responsibility that involves investing in the people behind the care with fair pay, safe staffing levels, mental health resources, leadership that listens and acts, and opportunities for professional growth.

This week, we recognize the people behind the patch and reaffirm our commitment, as partners and communities, to Improving Outcomes, Together.

Happy EMS Week 2026!

Meet Aryana!

What is your certification?
- EMT-B

How long have you worked for Bath Ambulance?
- I have been a volunteer since January and have recently been moved to a paid employee.

What do you enjoy most about working here?
- My favorite thing about being here is getting to learn from the amazing people who have been doing this longer than I am and getting to help them teach people like me who are also just starting out.

What’s one thing people don’t realize about EMS?
- I don't think a lot of people realize that when you join an EMS agency you also become part of a family.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
- People are usually surprised to learn that I got my EMT certification at seventeen inbetween my junior and senior year of highschool.
Advice for someone just starting in EMS?
- My advice for something just starting out is that it's easy to learn what you're doing, but it's much harder to have the confidence in yourself to realize just how much you know.
