What Is an Autoimmune Disease?
Our immune system is like the body’s army. Its job is to protect us from germs, viruses, and other harmful invaders.
In an autoimmune disease, the immune system becomes confused and mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy tissues.
Think of it like a security guard who accidentally starts treating the people he is supposed to protect as enemies.
This can cause inflammation, pain, weakness, and damage to different organs depending on which part of the body is affected.
Some common autoimmune diseases include:
• Rheumatoid Arthritis (joints)
• Lupus (multiple organs)
• Multiple Sclerosis (nerves)
• NMOSD (optic nerves and spinal cord)
• Type 1 Diabetes (pancreas)
Autoimmune diseases are not contagious and are not caused by weakness or lack of willpower. They are medical conditions that often require proper diagnosis and long-term treatment.
With early diagnosis, medical care, and family support, many people with autoimmune diseases can live active and fulfilling lives.
